Chapter 13 - Midnight AssetsThere are moments when a life stops being a sequence of choices and becomes a countdown.

Emma felt the clock begin inside her bones.
Midnight.
Daniel had until midnight to move the last clean assets offshore, erase the Mercer-Vale trust trail, and disappear behind accounts no subpoena would easily reach. Vivian was in custody. Charles was confessing selectively. Nathan was running errands for ghosts. Wade Carver was somewhere with a gun.
And Rose—dead Rose, living Rose, impossible Rose—had called from the dark to warn her.
Agent Voss moved first.
“Which airport?”
Emma shook her head. “She didn’t say.”
“Nashville International is obvious,” Voss said. “Too obvious.”
Margaret wiped her face. “Daniel has used private charters from Smyrna.”
Emma nodded. “And John C. Tune for short flights.”
Voss started making calls.
Ruth pulled out a paper map from a drawer as if digital systems had offended God. Lillian, who had refused to rest, entered the office holding Caleb’s photo.
“If he leaves,” Lillian said, “does that mean he wins?”
Emma looked at her.
“No.”
It was the first answer that came without doubt.
“He can run from a courtroom,” Emma said. “Not from what we release.”
Agent Voss covered her phone. “Releasing too much can compromise prosecution.”
Emma looked at Caleb’s letter. “With respect, Agent Voss, withholding too much is how families like his survive.”
The agent studied her.
Then said, “Give me ten minutes before you burn the world down.”
Emma nodded. “You have seven.”
For seven minutes, Saint Agnes held its breath.
Voss coordinated with federal airport security, financial crimes units, and bank fraud contacts. Nora Ellison prepared a second article but held publication. Ruth called Jolene, who apparently knew every trucker between Nashville and Louisville. Margaret tried Rose’s number again and again. It went directly to voicemail.
At 11:04 p.m., Voss got a hit.
A charter request under the name D.M. Holdings.
Departure: Smyrna.
Destination: Nassau.
Passenger names: David Miller and Neil Marsh.
Daniel Mercer.
Nathan Mercer.
Takeoff scheduled: 11:45 p.m.
Emma stood.
Voss said, “You are not going there.”
Emma laughed. “I know you’re not new to women ignoring that sentence.”
“This is a federal operation.”
“Then operate quickly.”
Voss stepped closer. “Daniel wants you visible. He wants confrontation. If you show up, he may use you as leverage.”
“He already has.”
Margaret touched Emma’s arm. “She’s right.”
Emma looked at her. “Daniel has spent years using private rooms. He thrives where no one sees.”
Nora’s voice came from Ruth’s speakerphone. “Emma, I hate to say this, but cameras may help.”
Agent Voss glared at the phone. “Absolutely not.”
Nora continued, “I’m not suggesting interference. I’m suggesting presence. Public presence.”
Ruth said, “There’s a difference between spectacle and witness.”
Voss pinched the bridge of her nose.
Emma almost admired her restraint.
At 11:18 p.m., they left for Smyrna in three vehicles.
Agent Voss went with her partner.
Nora followed in a news van at a legal distance.
Emma rode with Margaret and Ruth in the church van, while Lillian stayed behind under federal protection. Jolene, reached through some mysterious highway sisterhood, arranged for two truckers to block the service road if a black SUV tried to leave fast.
“Is that legal?” Emma asked.
Ruth looked straight ahead. “Probably not in the way lawyers mean.”
Smyrna Airport glowed under harsh white lights when they arrived.
Wind swept across the tarmac.
A private jet waited near a hangar, stairs down, engines humming.
Daniel stood near the stairs in a dark coat.
Nathan paced beside him, phone in hand.
Wade Carver loaded bags into a black SUV parked by the hangar.
Emma’s entire body reacted to Daniel before her mind did: the old pull, the old dread, the memory of adjusting herself to survive his moods.
Then Daniel saw her.
Even from across the tarmac, she felt his rage.
Not because she had arrived.
Because others had arrived with her.
Federal vehicles rolled in with lights flashing.
Airport security moved from the terminal.
Nora’s camera crew stayed behind the fence, filming.
Daniel turned to Nathan.
Nathan looked ready to vomit.
Wade reached inside his jacket.
Agent Voss drew her weapon.
“Hands visible!” she shouted.
Everything froze.
Then Daniel did something Emma did not expect.
He smiled.
He walked toward her with both hands raised.
“Emma,” he called. “You made it.”
Voss ordered him to stop.
He did, still smiling.
“You always did enjoy dramatic entrances,” he said.
Emma said nothing.
Daniel’s eyes moved over her borrowed clothes, bruised mouth, and steady face.
“I loved you,” he said loudly enough for the cameras beyond the fence.
Emma almost laughed.
There it was.
The final costume.
The wounded lover.
“You acquired me,” she said.
His smile flickered.
“Is that what Rose told you?”
Margaret stiffened.
Daniel’s gaze slid toward her.
“Oh, Aunt Margaret,” he said softly. “Still chasing your dead sister through other people’s lives.”
Margaret flinched.
Emma stepped forward. “Where is the trust?”
Daniel’s face sharpened.
So Rose had been right.
Nathan whispered, “Daniel, stop.”
Daniel ignored him.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” he said to Emma. “That trust is poison. Your grandmother wasn’t a victim. She was part of it.”
Margaret shouted, “Liar!”
Daniel looked almost sorry. “Ask Charles.”
Agent Voss moved closer. “Daniel Mercer, you are being detained pending investigation—”
Wade fired.
Not at Emma.
At the hangar lights.
Darkness crashed over the tarmac.
People screamed.
May you like
The jet engines roared.
And Daniel lunged for Emma.
