Chapter 14 - The HangarDaniel’s hand closed around Emma’s arm, but this time he did not pull her behind him.

He pulled her in front.
A human shield.
The old Daniel would have hidden that instinct beneath charm. This Daniel had no audience left worth seducing.
Emma drove her elbow backward into his ribs.
He grunted, but his grip tightened.
“Move,” he hissed into her ear.
Gunfire cracked again near the hangar entrance. Agents shouted. Wade vanished into the darkness between vehicles. The jet’s engines screamed louder, wind whipping Emma’s hair across her face.
Daniel dragged her toward the aircraft stairs.
Nathan stood frozen halfway between the SUV and the jet, clutching a leather folder to his chest.
The trust.
Emma saw it.
So did Daniel.
“Nathan!” Daniel shouted.
Nathan looked at him.
For the first time Emma could remember, Nathan did not obey instantly.
His face was pale, wet with sweat, eyes darting between federal agents and his brother.
“Give it to me!” Daniel yelled.
Nathan’s mouth trembled. “You said nobody would get hurt.”
Daniel laughed harshly. “Are you twelve?”
That broke something.
Not courage, exactly.
Maybe humiliation fermented into panic.
Nathan backed away.
Daniel tightened his grip on Emma. “Nathan.”
Agent Voss’s voice cut through the dark. “Daniel, release her!”
Daniel shouted back, “She came at me!”
Emma twisted. “There are cameras.”
His mouth moved close to her ear.
“Not in the dark.”
The sentence should have terrified her.
Instead, it reminded her.
Daniel had always depended on darkness.
Dark rooms. Private conversations. Hidden documents. Silent relatives. Women too ashamed to speak.
Emma stopped struggling.
Daniel felt it and paused.
“What are you doing?”
Emma lifted her free hand.
Her phone screen glowed.
She had started recording the moment she saw him at the airport.
Daniel saw the red recording light.
His grip loosened.
That tiny hesitation saved her.
Emma dropped all her weight suddenly, slipping from his hold the way Ruth had taught women at the shelter to escape a grab. Daniel cursed, reaching again.
Margaret appeared out of nowhere and struck him across the face with her purse.
It was not elegant.
It was extremely effective.
Daniel stumbled.
Emma ran toward Nathan.
“Nathan!” she shouted. “Give me the folder!”
Nathan clutched it tighter. “You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it while running!”
Wade emerged near the SUV, weapon raised.
Before he could aim, Jolene’s semi horn blasted from the service gate.
The sound was monstrous.
Wade turned just as the truck barreled into view and stopped sideways across the exit, blocking the SUV’s escape.
Jolene leaned out the window.
“Try me, sweetheart!”
Ruth, somewhere behind Emma, yelled, “Language!”
Emma would have laughed if she weren’t sprinting across a tarmac.
Nathan bolted toward the hangar office.
Emma followed.
Behind them, Daniel shouted Nathan’s name with such hatred that Nathan ran faster.
Inside the office, fluorescent backup lights flickered. Filing cabinets lined one wall. A coffee cup sat abandoned on a desk.
Nathan slammed the door and locked it.
Emma pounded. “Nathan!”
“Go away!”
“Nathan, Wade will kill you for that folder.”
Silence.
Then Nathan sobbed once.
Emma softened her voice. “Daniel will blame you.”
“He already is.”
“Then stop helping him.”
The door opened a crack.
Nathan looked younger than his thirty-three years. Without his smirk, he looked like what he was: a weak man who had hidden behind cruel people and mistaken it for strength.
“I didn’t know about Caleb,” he said.
Emma stared at him. “You ripped the smoke detector out of the ceiling.”
“I knew about money. Not murder.”
“Threats count, Nathan.”
His eyes filled.
“I thought it was just how business worked.”
Emma almost felt pity.
Almost.
“That sentence has buried a lot of people,” she said.
He held out the leather folder.
Before Emma could take it, the office window shattered.
Nathan screamed and dropped.
A bullet struck the filing cabinet behind him.
Emma dove to the floor.
Wade stood outside in the dark.
Daniel’s voice came from behind him.
“Bring me the folder.”
Nathan shoved it toward Emma with shaking hands.
“Take it,” he whispered. “Please.”
Emma grabbed the folder and crawled toward the back door.
It opened into a narrow hallway leading to a maintenance exit.
Behind her, the office door exploded inward.
Daniel entered first.
His face was bleeding where Margaret’s purse had split his cheek. His eyes were empty.
“Nathan,” he said softly. “I protected you.”
Nathan curled against the desk. “No. You used me.”
Daniel looked genuinely offended.
Emma rose at the maintenance exit with the folder in hand.
Daniel saw her.
For a heartbeat, everything stopped.
Then Agent Voss shouted from the hallway behind Daniel, “Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”
Wade turned.
Daniel reached for the folder.
May you like
Emma stepped backward through the exit into the cold night.
And fell straight into Rose Vale’s arms.
