Chapter 16 - Boardroom BloodThe emergency board meeting began at 3:00 p.m.

By then, Marlene had been arrested again.
This time, bail was not immediate.
The full bridge recording had changed the air around the case. Judges stopped answering old favors. Reporters stopped using the word dispute. Prosecutors began using words like conspiracy, attempted murder, unlawful confinement, fraud, witness intimidation, and child endangerment.
Marlene’s allies started pretending they had barely known her.
Daniel knew better.
At 2:50, he stood outside the Carter Logistics boardroom while Michael adjusted his tie like they were preparing for war.
Grace was at the estate with Lily, Rebecca, Erin, and two detectives. She wanted to come. Her doctor said no. Daniel was secretly relieved. This room had teeth.
Inside sat twelve board members.
Eight had received money through Marlene’s side channels.
Three had looked away.
One, Patricia Sloan, had been trying to warn Daniel for years but never had enough proof.
Daniel entered at exactly 3:00.
The whispers stopped.
He did not sit.
“Effective immediately,” he said, “Marlene Carter is removed from all advisory, voting, honorary, and operational roles connected to Carter Logistics and its subsidiaries.”
Board member Edwin Price leaned back.
“You can’t do that unilaterally.”
Daniel placed a folder in front of him.
“No. But the bylaws can.”
Edwin frowned.
Michael distributed copies.
Patricia Sloan smiled faintly.
Daniel continued, “Section 9.4 allows emergency suspension of any officer, advisor, or legacy trustee under criminal indictment or credible evidence of conduct materially harmful to the company.”
Edwin’s face reddened.
“Marlene is not indicted.”
“The prosecutor is filing within the hour.”
Another board member, Charles Benton, cleared his throat.
“Daniel, we all sympathize with your family situation, but we need stability.”
Daniel turned to him.
“Stability is not silence.”
Charles looked away.
Daniel opened another folder.
“For years, company funds were routed through consulting contracts, medical retainers, and shell vendors connected to my mother, Harold Vance, Victor Lang, and several members of this board.”
Now the room changed.
Men who had looked bored sat straighter.
One woman reached for water and missed the glass.
Daniel clicked a remote.
Charts appeared on the screen.
Transfers.
Dates.
Signatures.
Names.
No drama.
Just proof.
“The forensic team has already delivered copies to federal investigators.”
Edwin stood.
“You have no idea what you’re doing. You’ll destroy the company.”
Daniel looked at him.
“My mother said the same thing.”
“And she was right.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“No. She convinced all of you that accountability was destruction because corruption was profitable.”
Patricia Sloan stood.
“I move to suspend all implicated board members pending independent review.”
Silence.
Then another member slowly raised his hand.
Seconded.
Edwin shouted.
Charles cursed.
A woman near the end began crying quietly.
Daniel watched the empire tremble.
Not collapse.
Cleanse.
The vote passed seven to five.
Three security officers entered.
Not Daniel’s private security.
Federal agents.
Edwin looked at Daniel with hatred.
“You think this makes you righteous?”
Daniel said, “No. It makes me late.”
Agents escorted Edwin and two others from the room.
The remaining board members sat stunned.
Daniel finally took his seat.
“Now we talk about restitution.”
Patricia looked at him.
“For whom?”
“Employees harmed by false medical evaluations. Families pressured into settlements. Grace’s foundation. My daughter’s trust. Everyone Marlene buried with paperwork.”
Michael leaned toward him.
“That will cost millions.”
Daniel nodded.
“Good.”
His phone buzzed.
A message from Rebecca.
Lily is asking when you’re coming home. Grace remembered something about the night before the crash. She says Marlene wasn’t the only one in the car.
Daniel’s blood chilled.
He typed back.
Who else?
The reply came seconds later.
Your uncle Richard.
Daniel looked through the glass boardroom wall at the city below.
Richard Carter.
His father’s younger brother.
The man who had called Daniel that morning offering sympathy.
May you like
The man who currently chaired the family trust.
The next war had just introduced itself.
