Chapter 17 - Uncle RichardRichard Carter had always been the charming one.

Where Daniel’s father had been quiet and burdened, Richard was polished, warm, quick with jokes, and careful with condolences. He sent flowers before anyone asked. He remembered birthdays. He kissed Marlene’s cheek at every gala and called her “the iron queen” like it was affection instead of warning.

Daniel used to like him.

Now he sat across from Richard in the estate library, recording device on the table, Detective Ortiz in the next room, and Michael Reed beside him.

Richard looked wounded by the formality.

“Danny,” he said, using the childhood nickname Daniel now hated, “is this really necessary?”

Daniel did not smile.

“Grace remembers you in the car.”

Richard blinked once.

Only once.

Then he sighed.

“Grace has been through unimaginable trauma. I wouldn’t put too much weight on—”

“Don’t finish that sentence.”

Richard leaned back.

“Your mother is dangerous. I won’t deny that. But if you start accusing everyone she touched, you’ll drown.”

Daniel studied him.

Richard looked immaculate. Silver hair. Navy suit. Kind eyes.

A man built to be trusted by widows, boards, and judges.

“Were you there the night Grace crashed?”

Richard looked at Michael.

“Should I have counsel?”

Michael replied, “That depends on whether you intend to lie.”

Richard’s smile faded.

Daniel slid a printed still from the bridge video across the table.

The rain blurred much of the image, but the passenger side of Marlene’s town car was visible.

A hand rested against the window.

A man’s hand.

Gold signet ring.

Richard looked at it.

His own right hand slowly curled.

Too late.

Daniel had already seen the ring.

Richard whispered, “I didn’t know she would hit the car.”

Daniel’s pulse slammed.

Michael went still.

From the next room, Ortiz entered silently.

Richard saw him and closed his eyes.

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“What did you know?”

Richard rubbed his face.

“Marlene said Grace had stolen documents and was going to ruin the family over accounting confusion.”

“Stop calling theft confusion.”

Richard’s eyes opened.

“You think you’re the first Carter to discover ugly money? Your grandfather built half this company through bribes and threats. Your father cleaned what he could. Marlene protected what remained.”

“My father tried to expose her.”

“Your father lost his nerve.”

Daniel stood.

Richard continued quickly, “I told Marlene to talk to Grace. That’s all. I swear. I was in the car because Marlene said Grace would listen if I came.”

“And after the crash?”

Richard looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“After the crash?”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“Grace was alive. Marlene called Lang. I said we needed an ambulance. She said the ambulance would bring police, and police would bring questions, and questions would destroy everything your father left.”

“So you helped hide her.”

“I panicked.”

“For three years?”

Richard flinched.

Daniel leaned over the table.

“My daughter grew up without her mother because you panicked?”

Richard’s face twisted.

“I sent money to St. Agnes to make sure Grace was cared for.”

Daniel almost hit him.

Michael stood fast.

Ortiz moved closer.

Daniel forced himself still.

“You funded the prison and called it care.”

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

Whether real or useful, Daniel no longer cared.

“There’s more,” Richard whispered.

Daniel stared at him.

“What?”

Richard looked toward the ceiling, toward Grace’s room.

“Marlene didn’t keep Grace alive out of mercy.”

“I know. She wanted signatures.”

Richard shook his head.

“No. Grace had already transferred her voting shares before the crash.”

Daniel froze.

“To whom?”

Richard swallowed.

“To Lily.”

The room went silent.

Michael whispered, “That means Lily controls—”

“The swing block,” Richard said. “The shares that decide control of Carter Logistics when she turns twenty-one. Until then, her legal guardian votes them.”

Daniel understood.

The guardianship petition.

The fake medication.

The attempt to paint him unstable.

Marlene did not only want Lily.

She wanted Lily’s power.

Richard looked at Daniel with pleading eyes.

“She’ll never stop. Not while Lily has those shares.”

Daniel turned away, fighting nausea.

Ortiz stepped forward.

“Richard Carter, you need to come with me.”

Richard stood slowly.

At the doorway, he looked back.

“There’s one more thing.”

Daniel did not turn.

Richard said, “Marlene kept a second petition. Not for guardianship.”

Daniel’s body went cold.

“What kind?”

Richard’s voice broke.

“Termination of parental rights.”

Daniel turned.

Richard was crying now.

“She planned to prove you were dangerous, take Lily, and erase you legally before Grace could testify.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

Upstairs, Lily laughed softly at something Grace said.

The sound floated down the staircase, innocent and alive.

Daniel looked at his uncle and finally understood the whole shape of Marlene’s plan.

She had not only stolen the past.

She had prepared to steal the future.
