Chapter 16 - THE FAMILY MEETING WITHOUT MEAunt Denise organized a family meeting.

Not to attack me.
This time, to confront my parents.
I did not attend.
Reed advised against it. Alicia threatened to hide my laptop if I tried.
But Paige recorded audio legally because Illinois consent rules were complicated and Reed had guided her carefully on what she could and could not do.
The meeting happened in Aunt Denise’s living room on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
My parents arrived separately.
Connor did not come. His attorney had forbidden it.
Uncle Rob opened with a simple question.
“How long?”
My mother acted confused.
“How long what?”
“How long have you been taking Maya’s money?”
Evelyn gasped. “How dare you.”
But Denise did not fold.
For once, someone who shared my blood stood firm.
“No, Evelyn. How long?”
My father said nothing.
The recording captured plates clinking, someone shifting in a chair, rain tapping windows.
Then Paige spoke.
“She paid your mortgage. She paid Connor’s cards. She paid your taxes. She paid for Grandma’s funeral flowers that you took credit for.”
I hadn’t known Paige knew that.
My mother’s voice sharpened. “Maya wanted to help.”
Uncle Rob said, “Maya was trained to help.”
Silence.
Then my father finally spoke.
“You don’t understand our situation.”
Denise replied, “I understand you forged your daughter’s name while she was dying.”
My mother started crying.
“I gave birth to her.”
Gloria’s words echoed in my head later when I heard that part.
People hate hearing mothers can be monsters because it ruins greeting cards.
Denise said, “Giving birth does not give you ownership.”
My mother screamed then.
Not cried.
Screamed.
That I had poisoned everyone against her.
That I was always difficult.
That Connor had dreams.
That Richard had pressure.
That I had no children and no real responsibilities.
That money sitting in my account while family struggled was selfish.
There it was again.
Selfish.
The old spell.
But this time, nobody obeyed it.
Uncle Rob said, “She needed that money to live.”
My mother answered, “She had insurance.”
That sentence ended the meeting.
According to Paige, everyone stopped speaking at once.
Because sometimes evil reveals itself not through rage, but through logic.
She had insurance.
As if my body were a billing category.
As if survival were covered, so theft was acceptable.
After the meeting, Denise sent Reed a statement.
Paige did too.
Uncle Rob followed.
The family wall cracked.
Not because they became heroes overnight.
Because evidence gave them permission to admit what cowardice had kept buried.
That evening, I listened to the recording once.
Only once.
May you like
Then I deleted it from my phone but kept it with Reed.
I did not need my mother’s voice living in my pocket anymore.
