Chapter 15 - THE GRANDMOTHERPatricia Carter filed for emergency grandparent visitation within twenty-four hours.

Her petition painted Greg as a devoted father under “extraordinary stress,” Anna as unstable, Rachel as vengeful, and Lily as a confused child being isolated from “the only family she has left.”
Rachel threw the papers across Lily’s hospital room.
“Only family?” she said. “Anna was my sister.”
Lily looked up from her red-shoe catalog. “Is Grandma mad too?”
Rachel froze, instantly guilty. “I’m sorry, bug. That was grown-up stuff.”
Lily’s voice got very small. “Grandma says Carter girls don’t tell.”
Denise, who had been reviewing discharge plans, slowly lifted her head.
“What do Carter girls not tell?”
Lily shrugged, but her fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Things.”
“What things?” Rachel asked gently.
Lily looked toward the door.
Even though Greg was gone, fear still checked entrances.
“She said Mommy made Daddy angry because she told outside people family business.”
Patricia Carter had not been a passive grandmother.
She had been part of the cage.
Hayes began looking into Patricia immediately. What emerged was a long pattern of intimidation dressed as concern. Patricia had called Anna’s therapist pretending to be worried. She had contacted Lily’s school claiming Anna was mentally unstable. She had told neighbors Anna drank too much, though Anna’s medical records showed no evidence of it.
A family does not need many monsters.
Sometimes one monster teaches the others how to help.
Lily was discharged to Rachel’s home two days later under police escort. The hospital staff gathered quietly near the exit. No banners. No balloons. Just people who needed to see her leave alive.
Sarah gave Lily a stuffed red fox.
Chloe gave her a pocket-sized notebook. “For drawings or secrets or grocery lists like dramatic novels.”
Rachel laughed through tears.
I knelt. “Take care of those red shoes when you get them.”
Lily touched my sleeve. “Will I see you again?”
“Only if you need a doctor.”
She thought about that, then nodded seriously. “Maybe I can visit when I’m not hurt.”
My throat tightened.
“I’d like that.”
As Rachel carried her out, Lily looked back once.

For the first time, she was not looking for Greg.
She was looking to make sure we were still there.
