Chapter 3 - WHAT LILY WAS AFRAID TO SAYChild Protective Services sent an emergency responder named Denise Martin, a calm woman in a navy blazer who introduced herself to Lily before she spoke to any adult.

That mattered.
Most adults came in talking over children.
Denise crouched beside the bed. “Lily, you are safe in this hospital tonight.”
Lily stared at her. “Can Daddy hear me?”
“No,” Denise said. “We can ask him to leave.”
Greg immediately stood. “Absolutely not.”
Detective Hayes nodded to Officer Reed. “Remove him from the trauma bay.”
Greg exploded. “You can’t take my daughter away from me.”
Lily screamed.
It was not a normal child’s scream. It was raw, animal panic, the kind that tells every trained person in a hospital exactly what fear has done to a body.
I stepped between Lily and the doorway while Reed and two police officers escorted Greg out. He fought them only with words, but the words were enough.
“You think anyone will believe you?” he shouted past us. “You think your mommy’s coming back because you cried?”
Lily curled into herself.
The doors closed.
Only then did she begin to breathe.
Chloe whispered, “Mara.”
I knew what she meant. My name sounded strange in her mouth. Dr. Mara Ellis. Pediatric emergency physician. Mandatory reporter. Witness. Human being standing at the edge of something much darker than a fractured arm.
I sat near Lily but not too close. “You don’t have to tell us everything right now.”
Lily stared at the ceiling. “He said Mommy went away because I was bad.”
Denise’s face remained steady, but her eyes changed.
“Did you believe him?” Denise asked softly.
Lily nodded. “Sometimes.”
“No, sweetheart,” I said before I could stop myself. “No child makes her mother disappear.”
Lily looked at me as if I had given her water after a year of thirst.
Denise asked, “Do you know what Daddy put in your boot?”
Lily whispered, “He said it was Mommy’s proof.”
Hayes leaned in slightly. “Proof of what?”
Lily’s fingers twisted the blanket. “That she wasn’t a good wife.”
Greg’s voice seemed to linger in the room even after he was gone.
Then Lily said something that made Detective Hayes straighten.
“Mommy put the real proof in my bunny.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What bunny?” Hayes asked.
May you like
Lily’s eyes filled with terror again.
“The pink one,” she whispered. “The one Daddy buried.”
