Chapter 17 - The Man Behind the MoneyHis name was Victor Lang.

He had never appeared in family portraits, charity programs, hospital boards, or Rosemont holiday cards.

But his signature was everywhere once Detective Hale learned where to look.

On shell companies that moved Eleanor’s money.

On medical consulting agreements tied to illegal infant transfers.

On security contracts for Rosemont Downs.

On the private psychiatric clinic where Claire was nearly committed.

Victor Lang was Dr. Lang’s older brother, a former intelligence contractor turned “risk consultant” for wealthy families with dirty secrets.

And now he was missing.

Detective Hale came to the house on a gray Monday morning.

Claire already knew something was wrong.

Cops never visited early with good news.

“Victor Lang received a letter from Eleanor two days after sentencing,” Hale said.

Ethan leaned against the kitchen counter, jaw tight.

“What was in it?”

“We don’t know. But within hours, three offshore accounts emptied. A private plane registered under a shell corporation filed a flight plan, then disappeared from tracking.”

Claire’s hand moved to her stomach.

“What does he want?”

Hale looked at her.

“We think Eleanor kept him as insurance. If she went down, he may have instructions to destroy remaining witnesses.”

Maria, seated at the table, went still.

“Witnesses like me.”

“And the children,” Ethan said.

The room changed.

Noah and Lily were in the backyard with Rosa, chasing bubbles under the watch of two security officers. Claire could see them through the window, laughing.

The sound felt suddenly fragile.

Ethan said, “We leave.”

Hale nodded.

“I recommend temporary protective relocation.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Running again.”

“No,” Ethan said. “Protecting.”

Within six hours, the family was moved to a safe house in Vermont under private security coordinated with law enforcement. It sat near a lake surrounded by pine trees. Pretty enough to look like vacation. Isolated enough to feel like exile.

Noah loved it.

Lily hated it.

“Home?” she asked every morning.

Claire would kneel and say, “Soon.”

But soon is a cruel word to children.

Ethan spent his days on calls with lawyers, federal agents, and Rosemont board members. Claire spent hers helping the children build routines from nothing. Maria cooked. Rosa stayed
