Chapter 5 - The Chapel on Briar IslandThe chapel doors were locked.

Ethan slammed his shoulder into them once, twice, but the old oak barely shook. Rain soaked his hair and tuxedo shirt. Claire stood behind him, swaying with pain, staring at the stained-glass windows where candlelight flickered inside.

“Henry!” she shouted.

For a moment, only thunder answered.

Then came the cry again.

Small.

Terrified.

“Mama?”

Claire’s knees nearly gave out.

Ethan turned to her.

His face broke.

That one word had torn through both of them.

Mama.

Not Margaret.

Not Eleanor.

Mama.

Claire pressed both hands to the chapel door.

“Henry! Baby, I’m here!”

Inside, something crashed.

Detective Hale and two officers ran up the stone path.

“Move back.”

One officer used a ram from the patrol car. On the third hit, the lock splintered. The doors burst open.

The chapel smelled of candle smoke, wet stone, and roses.

Hundreds of white roses filled the aisle.

At the altar stood Eleanor.

She wore the same silver gown from the gala, but now her hair had come loose around her face. In one hand she held Henry, wrapped in a navy coat, his cheeks wet with tears. In the other hand she clutched a leather folder.

Claire stopped moving.

Henry was real.

Not a blurry glimpse from across a charity garden. Not a whispered rumor from a terrified nurse. Not a photograph stolen from a school application.

Real.

Her son had Ethan’s eyes.

Ethan made a sound like he had been punched.

“Henry.”

The little boy looked toward him, confused and frightened.

Eleanor pulled him closer.

“Don’t come any nearer.”

Detective Hale raised one hand.

“Eleanor Rosemont, put the child down.”

Eleanor smiled, but it shook at the edges.

“You have no idea what you’re interrupting.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Give him to me.”

Henry stared at her.

His little brow wrinkled as if some part of him recognized her from a dream.

Eleanor lowered her face to his hair.

“She abandoned you,” she whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Remember what Grandmother told you. Bad mothers leave.”

Claire flinched.

Ethan’s eyes turned murderous.

“You stole him.”

“I saved him,” Eleanor snapped.

The polished mask finally cracked.

Her voice rose through the chapel.

“I saved this family from her. From weakness. From scandal. From your father’s stupidity.”

“My father?” Ethan said.

Eleanor laughed.

“Your father was going to ruin everything. He found out about Claire. About the baby. About what had to be done.”

Detective Hale’s gaze sharpened.

“What had to be done?”

Eleanor’s eyes glittered.

“Rosemont blood could not be raised by a woman like her.”

Claire’s voice shook with fury.

“A woman like me?”

“A maid’s daughter,” Eleanor spat. “A scholarship girl. A pretty face Ethan dragged into our world because he wanted to rebel against me.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“I married her because I loved her.”

“And look what love did,” Eleanor hissed. “It made you useless. Soft. Ready to hand your inheritance to a woman who would have taken your son and turned him against us.”

Claire’s hand moved protectively over her abdomen.

Eleanor saw.

Her expression twisted.

“And now another one.”

Ethan moved before anyone could stop him.

“Don’t look at her.”

Eleanor lifted the folder.

“One more step, and the truth burns.”

Detective Hale said, “What truth?”

Eleanor’s smile returned, wild and proud.

“The truth about Arthur Rosemont.”

Ethan froze.

Claire glanced at him.

Arthur Rosemont had died three years ago, two weeks after Claire’s baby was declared dead. Officially, he suffered a heart attack in his study. Quiet. Private. Convenient.

Claire had never believed it.

Now Eleanor stood in the family chapel, holding the child she had stolen and the file Claire had come back to expose.

“He was going to change the will,” Claire said.

Eleanor’s eyes snapped toward her.

Claire continued, breathless. “Arthur found out you forced the divorce papers. He found out Ethan’s son was alive. He was going to remove you from the trust.”

Eleanor trembled with rage.

“He was going to hand Rosemont Industries to a baby and a street girl.”

“He was going to tell the truth,” Ethan said.

Eleanor looked at her son then.

For the first time, there was no performance.

Only hatred.

“I built this family after your father nearly drank it into dust. I smiled beside weak men. I hosted their dinners. I cleaned their scandals. I turned your name into power.”

“And murdered him for it?”

She did not answer.

She did not need to.

Henry began to sob harder.

Claire took another step.

“Eleanor,” she said softly, “you can hate me. You can hate Ethan. But he’s scared. Give him to me.”

Henry reached one tiny hand toward Claire.

Eleanor looked down.

Something like panic crossed her face.

“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no.”

Henry cried, “Mama.”

Claire’s entire body shook.

Eleanor’s grip tightened.

“Stop calling her that!”

Ethan lunged.

Detective Hale shouted.

The chapel erupted.

Eleanor stumbled backward toward the altar steps, Henry crying in her arms. Claire moved faster than anyone expected, ignoring the pain, reaching for her son.

For one terrifying second, Eleanor looked toward the cliffside window behind the altar.

Ethan saw the thought form in her mind.

If I can’t keep him, no one can.

“No!” Ethan roared.

Claire threw herself forward.

Henry slipped from Eleanor’s arms.

Ethan caught him.

Claire crashed against the altar rail.

Eleanor screamed as Detective Hale grabbed her from behind and forced her arms down.

The leather folder fell open.

Documents scattered across the chapel floor.

Birth records.

Transfer papers.

Bank payments.

A death certificate with Arthur Rosemont’s signature forged.

And one old photograph.

Claire saw it and went still.

It showed Ethan’s father standing beside a young woman holding a baby.

On the back, written in Arthur’s handwriting, were four words.

Eleanor’s first stolen child.

Claire looked up slowly.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

He held Henry against his chest, shaking.

Claire picked up the photograph with trembling fingers.

“The baby in this picture…”

Eleanor laughed from the floor, breathless and broken.

Detective Hale tightened the cuffs around her wrists.

Ethan looked at the photo.

His face went white.

The baby had his eyes.

But the woman holding him was not Eleanor.

Claire stared at her husband.

“Ethan… who is your real mother?”
