Chapter 12 - The Man With the FlowersArthur Bell arrived at Elena’s hospital room carrying white lilies.

He wore a charcoal suit, a navy tie, and the grave expression of a family friend devastated by tragedy. To the nurses, he looked respectable. To the hospital receptionist, he was on the approved visitor list.
Because Marianne had added him.
Elena was asleep when he entered.
The room was dim. Daniel had stepped away less than fifteen minutes earlier after Rebecca called about Elliot Crane. A uniformed officer stood at the end of the hallway, but Arthur had smiled, shown identification, and explained he was the Hartwell family attorney.
People trusted men like Arthur Bell.
That was how men like Arthur survived.
He placed the flowers on the table.
Elena opened her eyes.
For a moment, she looked confused.
Then recognition came.
“Arthur?”
He smiled gently.
“Elena. I’m sorry to disturb you.”
“Where’s Daniel?”
“Handling urgent matters.”
Arthur pulled the chair closer to her bed.
“I won’t stay long.”
Elena’s instincts sharpened.
Something about his voice was too calm.
“Did Daniel send you?”
“In a way.”
That was not an answer.
Arthur reached into his briefcase and removed a folder.
“I need you to sign a temporary guardianship clarification.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“Just a precaution. With the investigation expanding and Daniel under pressure, the family needs to ensure Grace and Noah’s trust remains protected.”
Elena’s fingers curled around the blanket.
“No.”
Arthur’s smile barely changed.
“You haven’t read it.”
“I don’t need to.”
He tilted his head.
“Elena, you’re exhausted. You’ve endured a terrible trauma. No one expects you to understand the legal complexities right now.”
“My children are not a complexity.”
The air changed.
Arthur looked at her for a long moment.
Then the kindness left his face.
“Vanessa was impulsive,” he said. “That was unfortunate. But she did understand one thing clearly. You became a problem the day Daniel gave you influence.”
Elena reached slowly for the nurse call button.
Arthur noticed.
“Don’t.”
She pressed it anyway.
Nothing happened.
Arthur lifted the cord from beneath the bed.
Disconnected.
Fear moved through her, cold and immediate.
“What do you want?”
“Sign the clarification.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“You are lying in a hospital bed because you confused sentiment with power. Do not make the same mistake twice.”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Officer!”
Arthur sighed.
“He stepped away. Coffee, I believe.”
Elena’s mind raced.
She was weak, stitched, trapped in a bed. But she was not helpless.
Her phone lay on the side table, just out of reach.
Arthur followed her gaze.
“Looking for this?”
He picked it up.
Then the bathroom door opened.
Daniel stepped out.
Arthur froze.
Daniel had been there the entire time.
His phone was in his hand, recording.
Elena turned her head, relief flooding her face.
Daniel’s voice was ice.
“You always did talk too much when you thought women were alone.”
Arthur recovered quickly.
“Daniel. This is not what it looks like.”
“No?” Daniel stepped closer. “Because it looks like you entered my wife’s hospital room, disabled her call button, and tried to force her to sign over control of our children’s trust.”
Arthur straightened his jacket.
“You’re emotional.”
Daniel smiled without warmth.
“That line is getting old.”
The door opened behind him.
Rebecca entered with two federal agents.
Arthur’s face changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
Daniel looked at the agents.
“He’s all yours.”
Arthur turned toward Elena one last time.
“You have no idea what your husband inherited.”
Elena looked back at him.
“No,” she said quietly. “But I know what my children won’t.”
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
As the agents took him away, Daniel moved to Elena’s side.
She reached for his hand.
“Did you know he would come?”
“I hoped.”
“That’s a terrible plan.”
“It worked.”
She looked at the disconnected call cord.
“Barely.”
Daniel kissed her hand.
Outside the room, Arthur Bell stopped walking and looked back.
His voice carried down the hall.
“This family was built on secrets. You pull one thread, Daniel, and you bury everyone.”
May you like
Daniel held Elena’s hand tighter.
“Then we dig.”
