Chapter 6 - The Boardroom TrapHartwell Logistics had been built on discipline.

Daniel’s grandfather started with three trucks and a warehouse outside Cleveland. His father expanded the company into interstate shipping. Daniel took it national, securing federal contracts, medical supply routes, and emergency logistics partnerships that made the Hartwell name powerful.
Powerful enough to attract enemies.
But Daniel had never imagined the enemy would sit across from him at Thanksgiving dinner.
The emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.
Daniel attended by video from a private conference room at the hospital. Rebecca Sloan sat beside him, a stack of documents arranged with surgical precision.
On the screen, twelve board members waited.
Some looked concerned.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Two looked guilty.
Daniel noticed everything.
Chairman Porter cleared his throat.
“Daniel, first, let me say the board is deeply concerned about Elena and the babies.”
“Thank you.”
“However, given the federal audit and the allegations circulating—”
Rebecca interrupted smoothly.
“There are no formal allegations against Mr. Hartwell.”
Porter blinked.
“Not formal, no. But there are irregularities bearing his authorization credentials.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Credentials that were stolen.”
A board member named Lawrence Pike adjusted his glasses.
“That is one interpretation.”
Daniel looked at him.
“One?”
Pike’s mouth tightened.
“Daniel, we all sympathize with your personal situation, but the company cannot be governed by emotion.”
Daniel almost smiled.
There it was.
The opening move.
Make him look unstable. Emotional. Distracted.
Exactly the same strategy Vanessa was using against Elena.
Rebecca slid a file toward him.
Daniel opened it.
“Lawrence,” he said calmly, “do you remember approving North Meridian Freight as a vendor?”
Pike frowned.
“This is hardly the time—”
“Do you remember?”
Pike looked toward Porter.
“It was standard procurement.”
Daniel clicked a button.
A document appeared on every board member’s screen.
North Meridian Freight.
Registered Agent: Elise V. Hart.
Beneficial Ownership: Redacted.
Rebecca spoke next.
“Elise V. Hart is an alias used by Vanessa Hartwell. We have registration records, bank routing data, and server access logs tying North Meridian to approximately 2.8 million dollars in diverted payments.”
The boardroom fell silent.
Pike’s face changed color.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“Would you like to explain why you approved emergency vendor status for a company my sister secretly owned?”
Pike’s voice came thin.
“I had no knowledge of—”
Rebecca clicked again.
An email appeared.
From Vanessa Hartwell to Lawrence Pike.
Don’t worry. Daniel signs what I put in front of him. By the time the audit notices, Elena’s trust will keep everyone quiet.
Porter whispered, “My God.”
Daniel’s eyes did not leave Pike.
“How many?”
Pike swallowed.
“What?”
“How many board members did she buy?”
No one spoke.
Then a woman named Priya Desai raised her hand slowly.
“I received concerns from accounting six months ago,” she said. “I forwarded them to Marianne.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
His mother again.
“What happened after that?”
Priya looked pained.
“Marianne said she would handle it internally. The accountant who raised the concern resigned two weeks later.”
Rebecca made a note.
Daniel looked around the screen.
“This company will cooperate fully with federal investigators. Every server, every email, every bank record. Anyone involved will be removed.”
Porter nodded quickly.
“Agreed.”
Pike stood.
“This is outrageous. You can’t use a family tragedy to conduct a purge.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“My wife is in a hospital bed because my sister needed silence. My newborn children are in incubators because financial crimes became physical violence. So yes, Lawrence, I can.”
Pike disconnected from the call.
That was all the confirmation Daniel needed.
Rebecca’s phone buzzed.
She read the message, then looked at Daniel.
“What?”
“The police searched Vanessa’s apartment.”
“And?”
“They found a second phone.”
Daniel waited.
Rebecca’s expression darkened.
“It contains messages between Vanessa and someone saved only as M.”
Daniel already knew.
But knowing did not soften the blow.
Marianne.
May you like
His mother had not merely believed Vanessa.
She had helped her.
