Chapter 13 - Evelyn’s VoiceThe attack lasted less than four minutes.

It felt endless.

Police returned fire. Mabel dragged Samuel Price’s nurse behind an overturned table. Adrian shielded Lena with his body even after she shoved him and shouted that she could move herself. Detective Bell moved through the chaos like someone who had seen fear too many times to obey it.

When it was over, two attackers were wounded, one had fled, and Samuel Price was alive.

Barely.

An ambulance screamed toward the house.

Lena stood in the hallway shaking so hard she could barely hold the cassette tape.

Adrian’s sleeve was torn. Blood marked his forearm.

“You’re hurt,” she said.

“So are you.”

“I’m always hurt lately.”

Despite everything, his mouth twitched.

Then Samuel called weakly from the living room.

“Lena.”

She rushed to him.

The old man’s breathing rattled, but his eyes were clear.

“Your mother loved you more than the truth,” he whispered.

Lena’s eyes filled. “What does that mean?”

“It means she could have run with the ledger. She could have saved herself.” Samuel swallowed. “But she stayed because they threatened you.”

Lena gripped his hand.

“She hid the truth so you could live long enough to find it.”

The ambulance team came in then, and Samuel was taken away beneath oxygen and flashing red light.

Detective Bell secured the cassette as evidence, but after hours of formalities, copies were made under supervision. By evening, they gathered in a secure conference room at the district attorney’s office.

Lena sat at the table.

Adrian on one side.

Mabel on the other.

Detective Bell inserted the copied audio file into a digital player.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then Lena heard her mother’s voice.

Older than in memory.

Weaker.

But unmistakable.

“My name is Evelyn Ward. If this recording has reached Lena, then my worst fear and greatest hope have both come true.”

Lena broke instantly.

Mabel held her.

Adrian lowered his head.

The recording continued.

“Lena, my darling girl, I am sorry. I am sorry for every birthday I will miss, every dress I will not sew, every morning you will wake up needing me and find silence instead.”

Lena pressed both fists against her mouth.

“But listen to me. Shame is not your inheritance. They will try to give it to you because it is cheaper than justice. Do not accept it.”

Adrian’s eyes glistened.

Evelyn’s voice grew quieter.

“Vivian is dead. I believe Thomas let her die. Richard helped hide it. They have taken the Moonfall Collection and blamed me. They have threatened you. I signed what they put in front of me because Richard said if I refused, my daughter would vanish into a system where even my ghost could not find her.”

Lena sobbed once, sharp and broken.

Mabel whispered, “Oh, Evelyn.”

The tape hissed.

“I am not brave tonight. I am only a mother. If cowardice keeps you breathing, then let the world call me coward. But I have hidden the ledger. I have hidden the gown. I have hidden enough truth that someday, when you are grown, you may choose what to do with it.”

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn’s voice softened.

“I hope you choose peace. But if peace is impossible, choose fire.”

Lena looked up slowly.

The room was silent except for the recording.

“And Adrian,” Evelyn continued.

He went still.

“If Vivian’s son hears this, your mother loved you. She did not leave you. She was coming back for you. Never believe a cruel man’s version of a woman he needed gone.”

Adrian covered his face with one hand.

Lena reached across the table.

This time, she did not stop herself.

Her fingers touched his wrist.

He held on like drowning men hold rope.

The tape neared its end.

“Lena, inside the Sapphira gown is the final key. I stitched it where only love would look closely. Find the moon without stars.”

Static.

Then nothing.

Detective Bell stopped the player.

Mabel was crying openly.

Adrian’s hand remained wrapped around Lena’s.

For once, she let it.

“The gown,” Lena whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“The final key is inside the gown.”

Detective Bell stood. “Where is it now?”

Adrian’s face changed.

“At Blackwood House.”

Mabel went pale.

Lena stood so quickly her chair scraped backward.

“Your father has it?”

Adrian pulled out his phone.

No signal.

Detective Bell’s phone rang.

She listened for three seconds.

Then her eyes sharpened.

“What?”

May you like

She looked at Adrian.

“Blackwood House is on fire.”
