Chapter 16 - The Video No One SurvivedThe district attorney wanted to review the tapes privately.

Lena refused.
Adrian refused.
For once, they were completely on the same side.
They watched in a secure evidence room with Detective Bell, two prosecutors, Mabel, and a trauma counselor who spoke gently before the footage began and was ignored by everyone who needed her most.
The first tape showed the Ward & Blackwood studio stairwell.
Grainy. Angled. Silent at first.
Vivian Blackwood lay on the stairs, bleeding but moving.
Evelyn Ward knelt beside her, pressing cloth to the wound, speaking desperately.
Then Thomas arrived.
Even in old footage, his presence changed the air.
Richard Vale entered behind him.
The tape had audio after a crackle.
Evelyn’s voice: “Call them again. She’s losing too much blood.”
Thomas: “Get away from my wife.”
Vivian reached for him.
Thomas knelt.
For one terrible second, Adrian leaned forward as if he could enter the past.
Vivian said something.
The audio hissed.
Then Thomas’s voice came clear.
“Think of Adrian.”
Vivian sobbed.
Thomas leaned closer.
“He will be fine. Boys survive mothers.”
Adrian made a sound Lena would never forget.
Not a sob.
Something deeper.
Mabel grabbed his hand.
On the screen, Evelyn tried to push past Richard. He caught her by the arm. Thomas stayed beside Vivian, doing nothing. Not helping. Not calling. Not pressing the wound.
Just waiting.
The time stamp continued.
Minute after minute.
By the time paramedics arrived, Vivian had stopped moving.
The prosecutor whispered, “Jesus.”
Adrian stood abruptly and walked to the wall.
Lena followed.
She did not ask permission.
She placed her hand beside his against the wall, not touching, just near enough for him to know he was not alone.
His voice was shattered.
“He watched her die.”
“Yes,” Lena whispered.
“My whole life, he let me think she chose to leave.”
Lena’s eyes burned.
“Our mothers didn’t leave us,” she said.
He turned toward her.
“They were taken.”
The second tape was Evelyn’s forced confession.
Lena thought she was ready.
She wasn’t.
Her mother sat at a table, pale and exhausted. Richard Vale stood behind the camera. Thomas Blackwood leaned against the wall. Celeste, eighteen and beautiful in a careless way, sat near the window filing her nails.
Richard placed papers in front of Evelyn.
“Sign.”
Evelyn’s voice shook. “You promised Lena would be safe.”
“She is safe as long as you behave.”
Thomas smiled faintly. “Think of it as a final act of motherhood.”
Lena gripped the table so hard her nails hurt.
On the screen, Evelyn signed.
Then she looked straight into the camera.
For one second, the broken woman vanished.
The mother remained.
“I love you, Lena,” she said.
Richard slapped her.
The room exploded.
Adrian surged toward the screen before anyone could stop him.
Lena screamed.
Not because of the slap.
Because twelve years of grief tore open at once.
Mabel held her while she sobbed so hard she could not breathe.
The counselor finally mattered then, guiding Lena through air, grounding her in the present.
The tape ended.
No one spoke for a long time.
By midnight, warrants were drafted.
By morning, Richard Vale’s estate was surrounded.
Thomas Blackwood’s lawyers attempted to negotiate.
The district attorney did not answer.
Celeste’s charges expanded.
News networks picked up the story.
Not fashion scandal.
Not mystery woman.
Not gala drama.
Now the headline read:
BILLIONAIRE FAMILIES ACCUSED IN COVER-UP OF DESIGNER’S RUIN AND HEIRESS’S DEATH.
Lena hated that the world still needed wealth in the headline to care.
But it cared.
That afternoon, Detective Bell arrived with news.
“Richard Vale is claiming Celeste acted alone in the original theft.”
Mabel snorted. “Coward.”
“And Thomas Blackwood is claiming Vivian refused medical help.”
Adrian’s face went cold.
Detective Bell looked at Lena.
“They’re turning on each other.”
Lena remembered her mother’s words.
If peace is impossible, choose fire.
May you like
She looked at Adrian.
“Then let them burn.”
