Chapter 10 - The Nurse at the GateMarisol Vega looked like someone who had been running from rich people for too long.

Her coat was too thin.
Her hair was tucked under a knit cap.
Her hands shook around a paper cup of coffee Daniel had given her.
She sat in the small security office by the front gate, refusing to enter the manor.
“I’m not going back in that house,” she said when Clara arrived.
Clara knelt in front of her.
“Marisol, it’s me.”
The nurse’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
Clara froze.
“For what?”
Marisol looked past her at Alexander.
He stood near the door, silent, giving her space.
Marisol swallowed.
“I knew.”
Clara’s face went pale.
“You knew Noah was mine?”
“Not at first. But after that night, when you held him and he stopped crying…” She wiped her eyes. “I checked the old records. The clinic notes. Your name was buried, but it was there.”
Clara sat back.
Alexander’s voice was controlled.
“Why didn’t you report it?”
Marisol laughed bitterly.
“To who? Your mother owned the agency. Whitmore lawyers handled the contracts. I had a sick father and a visa renewal pending. They made sure I knew how disposable I was.”
Clara took her hand.
“What happened?”
Marisol looked at her.
“Vivienne happened.”
The security office went quiet.
“She came to the nursery after midnight sometimes,” Marisol said. “Not to care for Noah. To train him.”
Alexander’s eyes hardened.
“What does that mean?”
“She would bring photos. Women’s faces. Hers. Others. She would say, ‘This is who loves you. This is who stays.’ If he cried for Mommy, she would make everyone leave him alone until he stopped.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Alexander turned away for one second, fighting rage.
Marisol continued.
“One night he cried so hard he vomited. I picked him up. Vivienne told me if I comforted him again, I’d never work in childcare.”
Clara’s voice shook.
“Why are you here now?”
Marisol reached into her bag and pulled out a flash drive.
“Because I saved recordings.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“From the nursery?”
“Audio clips. Some video. I knew they were deleting things.”
Alexander took the drive carefully.
Marisol looked at Clara.
“I sent the letter.”
Clara’s breath caught.
Your son is not safe there.
“You saved him,” Clara whispered.
Marisol shook her head.
“I waited too long.”
“No,” Clara said. “You came.”
Those two words broke the nurse.
She began to cry.
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“Get her legal protection. Now. Employment attorney, immigration counsel, personal security. Everything.”
Marisol stared at him.
“Why would you help me?”
Alexander looked toward the manor.
“Because you did what everyone with more power should have done.”
Clara stood slowly.
“There’s more, isn’t there?”
Marisol’s face changed.
“Yes.”
Alexander waited.
Marisol looked at Clara.
“Vivienne wasn’t trying to become Noah’s mother because she loved him.”
“No one thought she loved him,” Clara said.
Marisol shook her head.
“No. You don’t understand. The Blackwood trust changes when Alexander marries. If his wife legally adopts Noah, she gets voting influence over his inheritance until he turns twenty-five.”
Alexander went still.
“That clause is sealed.”
Marisol nodded.
“Vivienne had copies.”
Alexander looked at Daniel.
Daniel was already typing.
Marisol continued.
“She said once Noah accepted her publicly, the rest would be easy. Adoption. Media campaign. Then private school abroad.”
Clara’s blood went cold.
“Abroad?”
Marisol nodded.
“She wanted him out of the country.”
Clara gripped the back of a chair.
Alexander stepped toward her, but she lifted one hand.
Not now.
If he touched her kindly, she might fall apart.
Marisol whispered, “There’s one more thing.”
Alexander’s voice was quiet.
“What?”
“The morning I was fired, I heard Vivienne arguing with Beatrice. She said Clara Hayes was becoming a liability.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Marisol’s voice dropped.
“And Beatrice said, ‘Then remove the liability before the engagement.’”
The room went silent.
Outside, beyond the gate, reporters were already gathering.
Inside, Clara realized the truth.

The ballroom scene had not ruined Vivienne’s plan.
It had saved Clara’s life.
