Chapter 5 - The Nursery FootageThe security room was beneath the west wing.

Most guests never knew it existed.

It had twelve monitors, steel cabinets, and a door that required two codes to unlock. Alexander entered with Clara, Noah, Daniel, Beatrice, Vivienne, and the family attorney, who had arrived so quickly his tie was crooked.

Noah sat on Clara’s lap in a chair too large for both of them.

He refused to let her hand go.

Daniel loaded the recovered footage.

“The deletion request came from an internal account,” he said.

Alexander looked at him.

“Whose?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Ms. Whitmore’s temporary access profile.”

Vivienne scoffed. “I was given planning permissions for tonight’s event. That proves nothing.”

Daniel clicked play.

The screen showed the nursery hallway two nights earlier.

Time stamp: 11:42 p.m.

Clara appeared on camera in her maid uniform, moving quietly with a folded blanket. She paused outside Noah’s door, looked both ways, then opened it.

Vivienne appeared thirty seconds later.

Her face on the footage was not the polished face from the ballroom.

It was hard. Angry. Real.

There was no audio at first.

Daniel adjusted the file.

Vivienne’s voice filled the room.

“You pathetic little ghost.”

Clara in the chair went still.

Alexander’s eyes darkened.

On screen, Clara backed away.

“I only brought his blanket.”

Vivienne stepped closer.

“You are done after tomorrow. Once Noah accepts me in front of everyone, you leave this house.”

Clara whispered from the chair, “I begged her not to send me away before his birthday.”

The video continued.

Vivienne said, “You had three years to disappear. Be grateful Mrs. Blackwood let you scrub floors instead of rotting in court.”

Noah looked up at Clara.

“Bad lady,” he whispered.

Vivienne’s face flushed.

“This is edited.”

Daniel said, “It is not.”

The footage kept playing.

Clara on screen said, “You promised he would never know.”

Vivienne smiled.

“I promised Beatrice. Not you.”

Beatrice closed her eyes.

Alexander looked at his mother.

The video was merciless.

Vivienne leaned close to Clara.

“If you tell Alexander anything, I will make sure every paper says you abandoned that baby for money. Who will he believe? A Blackwood bride or a maid?”

The room went silent.

Then the recording caught a small sound.

Noah’s bedroom door creaked.

Tiny Noah stood there in pajamas, clutching a stuffed bear.

“Mommy?” he whispered on the video.

Clara covered her mouth in the security room.

On screen, she dropped to her knees.

“Go back to bed, sweetheart.”

Vivienne grabbed Clara’s arm.

“Do not answer to that.”

The boy began to cry.

Vivienne crouched and smiled at him.

“Noah, darling, that’s not Mommy. That’s staff.”

The real Noah whimpered in Clara’s lap.

Alexander paused the video.

His hand hovered above the console.

He did not speak for several seconds.

When he did, his voice was dangerous in its calm.

“You looked at my son while he cried for his mother and told him she was staff.”

Vivienne’s confidence cracked.

“Alexander—”

“No.”

He turned to Daniel.

“Make copies. Send one to my attorney, one to child services, one to the district attorney’s office, and one to my private server.”

Beatrice stood quickly.

“Alexander, please. Think of the family.”

He laughed once.

It was a terrible sound.

“I am.”

The family attorney cleared his throat.

“We need to discuss custody implications before anything is released.”

Alexander looked at Clara.

She was pale, shaking, and holding Noah like the world might steal him again.

Then he looked at his attorney.

“Custody was built on fraud.”

“That appears likely,” the attorney said carefully.

“Then undo it.”

Beatrice whispered, “You don’t understand what this will cost.”

Alexander turned on her.

“I know exactly what it cost.”

His eyes moved to Noah.

“Three birthdays.”

To Clara.

“A mother’s grief.”

To himself.

“A son I loved from a distance because I thought his mother had chosen money over him.”

Clara’s eyes filled at that.

Alexander’s voice dropped.

“That ends tonight.”

Vivienne straightened, desperate now.

“You still need me. The board trusts my family. My father can pull the merger by morning.”

Alexander stepped close to her.

“Let him.”

“You’ll lose hundreds of millions.”

“No,” he said. “I already lost more than that.”

For the first time, Vivienne looked afraid.

Not sorry.

Afraid.

Because she had mistaken Alexander’s silence for weakness.

He looked at Daniel.

“Escort Ms. Whitmore to the east sitting room. She can wait for her attorney there.”

Vivienne’s voice rose.

“You can’t do this to me.”

Alexander’s eyes were ice.

“You did this to a child.”

The guards moved.

Vivienne turned toward Clara one last time.

“You think this makes you one of them?”

Clara lifted her chin.

“No,” she said quietly. “It makes him mine.”

Noah wrapped his arms around her neck.

May you like

“And mine,” he said.

Nobody corrected him.
