Chapter 16 - The Woman in the White CoatThey pulled hospital security footage for the previous night.

At 2:13 a.m., while Richard was at the boardroom preparing evidence and Maria slept in the chair, a woman in a white coat entered Ethan’s floor carrying a clipboard.

She wore a surgical mask.

She moved like someone who belonged.

The nurses did not stop her.

She stood outside Ethan’s room for seventeen seconds.

Then she entered.

The footage inside the room showed her approaching the bed. Ethan was awake. His eyes widened.

The woman lowered her mask.

Even without audio, Richard could read her lips.

Hello, sweetheart.

Ethan began to cry.

She touched his hair.

Richard’s hands clenched so hard his bandaged arm bled through.

The woman leaned close and said something else.

Lily, watching from Maria’s lap, whispered, “She’s not talking nice.”

A lip reader was brought in.

The words came back within the hour.

Your father will lose everything. Then you’ll come home with me.

Richard walked out before he broke the screen.

Maria found him in the stairwell.

“You need to breathe,” she said.

He laughed once, bitterly. “My whole life has become people telling me to breathe.”

“Then listen.”

He looked at her.

She stood two steps above him, still in the same borrowed sweater a nurse had found after the library shooting, hair pulled back, face tired, eyes fierce.

“I want to kill her,” Richard said.

“No, you want to stop feeling helpless.”

He hated how accurately she said it.

Maria sat on the step.

“When Ben was dying, I got angry at everyone. Doctors. God. People in nice cars. Mothers with healthy kids. The woman at the pharmacy who told me my card declined like she was announcing the weather.”

Richard sat below her.

“Did it help?”

“No.” Maria looked at her hands. “But it kept me standing until grief could.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I failed Ethan.”

“Maybe.”

He looked up.

Maria did not soften it.

“But he’s alive. So you still have time to fail differently.”

Despite everything, Richard smiled faintly. “That may be the most comforting insult I’ve ever heard.”

“It wasn’t meant to comfort you.”

“I know.”

Dana opened the stairwell door. “We have a location.”

Evelyn had used an alias to access a private residence in Beacon Hill owned by a trust connected to Malcolm Reese.

Police moved within the hour.

But Evelyn was gone.

On the dining table, they found a white coat, a hospital badge, and a printed photograph of Lily beside Ethan’s bed.

On the back, written in elegant black ink, were five words.

Every hero has a weakness.

Maria saw the photograph and went still.

Richard did not ask permission this time.

He simply said, “I’m putting you and Lily somewhere safe, and you can hate me for it after she turns eight.”

Maria wanted to argue.

Then Lily walked in holding Ethan’s robot.

“Mom,” she said quietly, “I don’t want to be a weakness.”

Maria’s face broke.

Richard knelt in front of Lily.

“You are not a weakness,” he said. “You are the reason the truth got strong enough to stand up.”

Lily stared at him.

“Does strong still get scared?”

“All the time.”

May you like

She nodded.

“Okay,” she said. “Then I’m strong.”
