Chapter 7 - The Price of Becoming FamousLily hated the name immediately.

“I’m not an angel,” she said, frowning at Richard’s phone screen. “Angels have clean shoes.”

Ethan, propped in his hospital bed, made a soft laugh that sounded like air through a paper straw.

It was the first laugh Richard had heard from him since the accident.

For one brief second, everything felt simple.

Then the hospital hallway erupted.

Reporters had found them.

Cameras crowded near the elevator. Hospital security blocked the doors, but voices carried.

“Is Lily Carter inside?”

“Did Richard Harrison refuse to help her family years ago?”

“Was the boy’s equipment sabotaged?”

“Mr. Harrison, did your assistant try to murder your son?”

Maria went rigid.

Lily shrank against her side.

Richard stepped into the hall and closed Ethan’s door behind him.

His security chief, Dana Wolfe, approached quickly. “We have a problem.”

“Only one?”

Dana held up a tablet.

The headline made Richard’s stomach twist.

MILLIONAIRE’S SON SAVED BY GIRL WHOSE BROTHER HIS FOUNDATION REFUSED TO HELP.

Below it was a photograph of Maria in her cleaning uniform, taken from some employee ID database, and a picture of Lily from the airport video, her face frozen mid-panic.

Maria saw it over his shoulder.

“No,” she whispered.

Richard turned to Dana. “Get that image down.”

“We’re trying. It’s already everywhere.”

Maria pushed past him. “You said you’d keep her out of this.”

“I tried.”

“Trying is what people say when they fail with lawyers.”

The words were harsh, but Richard accepted them.

Lily stood in Ethan’s doorway, clutching the toy robot.

“Are people mad at me?” she asked.

Maria’s face crumpled. “No, baby.”

“Then why are they saying my name like that?”

Richard crouched in front of her.

“Because people don’t always know the difference between a story and a person.”

Lily studied him. “Do you?”

He had no answer ready.

That afternoon, Richard made a decision his board hated.

He canceled every meeting. He postponed the launch of his company’s biggest platform. He refused three network interviews. Then he walked into a small hospital press room with Detective Mills beside him, Dana behind him, and Maria Carter standing several feet away only because Lily had asked her not to hide.

The microphones came alive.

Richard looked directly into the cameras.

“My son Ethan is alive because Lily Carter acted when adults, including people employed by me, failed him. She is a child. She is not a symbol, not a brand, not content, and not public property.”

Questions exploded.

He raised his hand.

“Three years ago, my foundation denied assistance to Lily’s younger brother, Benjamin Carter. My signature was on that denial. I did not read the file. That is not an excuse. It is an admission.”

The room quieted.

Maria stared at him.

Richard continued.

“I built systems that allowed me to feel generous without being responsible. Yesterday, a child paid more attention to my son than I paid to hers.”

One reporter shouted, “Are you saying your negligence killed Benjamin Carter?”

Dana moved forward, but Richard stopped her.

“I am saying money without attention is cowardice dressed as charity.”

The phrase would later be repeated across every news feed in America.

But inside the hospital, Lily did not care.

She was sitting beside Ethan, showing him how to make the robot salute.

Ethan blinked twice for yes.

Once for no.

“Do you want me to tell you a secret?” Lily asked.

Two blinks.

“My mom says rich people are just poor people with bigger problems and nicer coats.”

Ethan blinked twice again.

Lily leaned closer.

“But your dad cries normal.”

Another soft laugh came from Ethan.

Outside, Richard Harrison’s empire began to shake.

Inside, his son smiled.

For the first time, Richard knew which one mattered.
