Chapter 11 - THE STORAGE UNITThe storage facility was called SafeNest, which felt like a cruel joke.

Detective Hayes did not let me come, of course. I was a doctor, not an investigator. But Rachel authorized Hayes to update us because Anna’s letter had named me indirectly: Lily’s doctor. Somehow, Anna had trusted a stranger in advance.
The key opened unit 118.
Inside were three plastic bins, a locked metal box, and a child’s winter coat with Lily’s name written inside the collar.
That coat nearly broke Rachel.
“She was wearing that in the last Christmas photo,” she said.
Inside the bins were copies. Anna had copied everything. Birth certificates. Bank transfers. Photos. Names. Dates. Receipts from clinics in four states. Messages between Greg and people who used code words like “placement,” “quiet family,” and “clean discharge.”
The metal box contained a small camera.
Its memory card held the final recording Anna Carter ever made.
Hayes came to the hospital that evening to show Rachel privately. Rachel asked me to stay. I did not want to intrude, but she said, “Anna chose this hospital. Maybe she chose you.”
The video opened with Anna sitting in a parked car at night. Rain moved across the windshield. She looked exhausted and terrified.
“If something happens to me,” Anna said, “Greg did not snap. Greg planned.”
Rachel sobbed once and covered her mouth.
Anna continued. “He has been moving records through people at hospitals. He says nobody cares about women who already look unstable. He says children forget. Lily does not forget.”
The video shook as Anna looked over her shoulder.
“I am going to meet someone tonight who says they can help me. If I don’t come back, Rachel, fight for Lily. Do not let him turn her into a witness he can control.”
Then Anna leaned closer.
“And Greg, if you ever see this, know one thing. I taught our daughter where truth lives.”
The video ended.
Rachel folded forward, devastated.
I stood behind her, hands clenched.
Anna had known she might die.

But she had also known Greg’s biggest weakness.
He underestimated the little girl he had tried to use.
