Chapter 9 - THE MAN BEHIND THE FATHERBy dawn, the story began to split open.

Greg Carter was not only a grieving husband.
He was a broker.
Not the official kind. Not with licenses, offices, or clean contracts. He operated in the hidden spaces between desperate people and corrupt professionals. He knew which families wanted babies without questions. He knew which mothers could be pressured. He knew which records could be altered by someone with the right access and the wrong conscience.
Anna had found pieces of it by accident.
A payment receipt.
A fake discharge summary.
A photo of Greg with a woman who had later vanished from a maternity clinic in Ohio.
And then Anna began collecting proof.
Dr. Pierce sat in a locked administrative interview room while Hayes questioned him. I was not allowed inside, but later I learned enough.
Pierce claimed Greg had blackmailed him.
Years earlier, Pierce had signed off on a private placement that did not follow legal procedure. He told himself the baby was going to a loving home. He told himself the birth mother had consented. By the time he learned the paperwork was forged, Greg had evidence of Pierce’s signature.
After that, one compromise became many.
“He threatened my career,” Pierce told Hayes.
Hayes reportedly answered, “Children lost more than careers.”
That line spread through the hospital before noon.
Lily woke around seven.
Her first word was, “Auntie?”
Rachel was beside her instantly.
“I’m here.”
“Is Daddy mad?”
Rachel’s face crumpled, but she kept her voice steady. “Daddy can’t come in.”
Lily considered this. “Ever?”
Denise stepped forward gently. “Not unless a judge says it is safe. And a lot of people will speak for you.”
Lily turned to me. “Will you?”
The question struck harder than it should have.
Doctors speak in charts, testimony, findings, documentation. We are trained to be precise, not personal. But Lily was not asking whether I would fill out a form.
She was asking if an adult would stand still when Greg tried to scare them.
“Yes,” I said. “I will.”
Outside the room, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I ignored it.
It buzzed again.
Then a message appeared.

Drop this, Dr. Ellis. You don’t know what Anna did.
Attached was a photo of my house.
