Chapter 10 - BLOOD ON WHITE MARBLEThe gunshot shattered one of the sconces.

Glass rained across the marble floor.

In the darkness, chaos erupted.

Victoria shouted orders. Thomas tackled one of the guards. Nathan shielded Maya with his body as another shot cracked against the wall. Cecilia’s cane struck the floor hard, then clattered away.

Maya heard Lila sobbing.

She crawled toward the sound.

“Maya!” Nathan shouted.

But Maya did not stop.

Her injured wrist screamed with pain as she dragged herself behind a marble pedestal. Emergency lights flickered red along the baseboards, turning the gallery into a nightmare of moving shadows.

She saw Lila on the floor near the doorway, struggling against her bindings.

One guard was fighting Thomas. The other was searching for Maya.

Victoria was at the portrait, reaching into the hidden compartment.

Maya grabbed a shard of broken glass with her good hand and crawled to Lila.

“Hold still,” she whispered.

Lila’s eyes widened with terror.

Maya cut the tape around Lila’s wrists, slicing her own palm in the process.

Blood ran down her fingers.

The phrase returned.

Key under blood.

For one wild second, Maya wondered whether every secret in this family demanded pain as payment.

Lila pulled the tape from her mouth and gasped. “Mrs. Sterling—behind you!”

Maya turned.

Victoria stood over her holding a small sealed envelope taken from the portrait compartment.

In her other hand was a gun.

Nathan froze across the gallery.

Thomas had one guard pinned. The other lay groaning against the wall.

Victoria smiled down at Maya.

“You always crawl so well.”

Nathan’s voice was low. “Victoria, put it down.”

Victoria pointed the gun at Maya’s chest.

“Do you know what I hate most about you?” she asked. “It isn’t that Nathan loved you. Men love anything fragile if it makes them feel strong. It isn’t even the money. Money can be moved.”

Maya stayed still, breathing shallowly.

Victoria’s eyes burned.

“It’s that you arrived with nothing, and somehow everyone started confessing. Cecilia. Nathan. Staff. Lawyers. Even dead Rose. You make people sentimental, Maya. Sentiment ruins families.”

Maya looked at the envelope in Victoria’s hand.

“What’s in it?”

Victoria smiled. “The thing that ends you.”

Cecilia’s voice came from the floor. “No, child. It ends us.”

Victoria glanced toward her.

That was all Nathan needed.

He moved.

Maya grabbed Lila and rolled sideways as Nathan lunged. The gun fired. The bullet struck the marble where Maya had been. Nathan slammed into Victoria, knocking the weapon from her hand.

The envelope flew across the floor.

Maya scrambled for it.

So did Victoria.

Their fingers touched the paper at the same time.

Victoria screamed and yanked Maya’s injured wrist.

Pain exploded white behind Maya’s eyes.

But Maya did not let go.

For months, Victoria had taken everything from her: peace, dignity, trust, safety. She would not take this too.

Maya drove her shoulder into Victoria’s ribs.

Victoria fell back, shocked.

Maya clutched the envelope to her chest.

Nathan seized Victoria’s arms and forced them behind her back. Thomas kicked the gun away.

Police burst into the gallery seconds later.

Detective Bennett entered first, weapon raised.

“Drop everything!”

“It’s over,” Nathan said, breathing hard. “She’s done.”

Victoria laughed, wild and breathless, pinned beneath him.

“You think I’m done? You think I came here without insurance?”

Detective Bennett cuffed her.

Victoria’s eyes locked on Maya.

“Open it,” she hissed. “Open it and see why Rose hid it from everyone.”

Maya looked at Cecilia.

The old woman’s face was ashen.

Judith picked up the envelope with gloved hands and examined the wax seal.

It bore Rose Calloway’s initials.

R.C.

Inside was a folded document and a photograph.

Judith unfolded the paper first.

Her eyes widened.

Nathan stood. “What is it?”

Judith did not answer.

She handed it to Maya.

Maya read the first line and felt the entire world tilt.

Certificate of Live Birth.

Female Child.

Mother: Rose Elaine Calloway.

Father: Edward Sterling.

Maya stopped breathing.

Nathan stared at the document.

Cecilia whispered, “No.”

May you like

Victoria smiled through blood on her lip.

“Yes,” she said. “Welcome home, cousin.”
