Chapter 16 - THE CONTRACT IN BLOODMarcus Vale placed a document on the steel table.

It was not old.
The paper was crisp, freshly printed, with Maya’s full legal name typed across the top.
MAYA CLARA CALLOWAY STERLING.
Seeing her mother’s name hidden inside her own made her chest ache.
Marcus set a pen beside it.
“Sign.”
Maya did not move.
Victoria looked from Marcus to the document. “What is this?”
“A settlement agreement,” Marcus said. “Maya acknowledges that all claims related to Rose Calloway are fraudulent. She transfers any possible rights, present or future, into a private trust controlled by my firm.”
Victoria’s face turned ugly. “Your firm?”
Marcus did not look at her. “You did not think I endured decades of Sterling arrogance merely to make you queen of a house you cannot manage.”
Victoria raised her gun.
Marcus raised his faster.
“Do not embarrass yourself.”
Maya watched them carefully.
The alliance was breaking.
Good.
Pain had taught her something: when predators turned on each other, prey had seconds to become something else.
Maya looked at Marcus. “Why does this matter to you?”
Marcus smiled. “Because Edward Sterling promised my grandfather twenty percent of everything if he buried Rose’s claim. Edward lied. He paid fees, favors, influence—but never ownership. My father died serving this family. I will not.”
“So this is revenge.”
“This is correction.”
“You sound like Victoria.”
His smile vanished.
Victoria’s eyes narrowed at Maya, but she said nothing.
Maya continued, “You both think the same way. You dress greed up as destiny.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Sign.”
“No.”
He sighed and nodded toward Victoria. “Shoot her in the leg.”
Victoria hesitated.
Marcus looked amused. “You wanted power. Power requires stains.”
Victoria’s hand shook.
For all her cruelty, she had always hurt Maya in ways she could explain away. A shove. A planted necklace. A heel on a wrist. A dramatic accident. But a gunshot in an underground room was different.
Maya saw the hesitation.
So did Marcus.
He laughed.
“You are weaker than I thought.”
Victoria’s face twisted with humiliation.
Marcus reached for Maya himself.
That was when Maya moved.
She grabbed the metal lamp from the table and swung it into Marcus’s hand. The gun fired, deafening in the small room. The bullet struck a pipe overhead. Steam screamed into the air.
Victoria lunged for the wooden rose box.
Maya shoved the table into Marcus’s knees.
He fell hard, cursing.
Maya ran.
Victoria grabbed her ankle.
Both women crashed to the floor.
Maya kicked free, scrambling through steam toward the tunnel.
Marcus shouted, “Stop her!”
Victoria rose, bleeding from one eyebrow, eyes wild with hate.
“Maya!”
But another voice thundered through the tunnel.
“Nathan is here!”
It was Thomas.
Relief nearly broke Maya.
She screamed, “Here!”
Marcus grabbed her from behind, locking an arm around her throat.
The pressure cut off her air.
Nathan appeared at the tunnel entrance, gun drawn, face savage with fear.
Behind him came Thomas and Detective Bennett.
Marcus pressed his pistol beneath Maya’s jaw.
“Lower your weapons,” he said.
Nathan froze.
Maya struggled to breathe.
Victoria stood near the wooden box, watching everything fall apart.
Marcus backed toward the table, dragging Maya with him.
“This woman signs, or she dies.”
Nathan’s eyes locked on Maya’s.
There was fear there.
But also trust.
For once, he did not charge blindly.
He waited.
Maya shifted her bleeding palm against Marcus’s sleeve.
Blood smeared across his white cuff.
Key under blood.
Her gaze dropped to the wooden box.
The groove was not only bracelet-shaped. At its center was a small red stone, like a sensor.
Maya understood.
Rose had built a second key.
Not gold.
Blood.
Maya slammed her bleeding hand onto the box.
It clicked open.
Every head turned.
Inside lay a sealed video drive, a bundle of original shares, and a letter addressed in Rose’s handwriting:
TO MAYA, AND TO THE FIRST STERLING BRAVE ENOUGH TO STAND WITH HER.
Marcus screamed, “No!”
That distraction saved her.
Maya dropped her weight suddenly.
Nathan fired.
The bullet struck Marcus’s shoulder.
He fell back, howling.
Detective Bennett tackled him.
Thomas disarmed Victoria as she lunged for the box.
Nathan caught Maya before she hit the floor.
For a moment, all she heard was his heartbeat.
Then Victoria began laughing.
Softly at first.
Then louder.
Everyone turned.
She looked at the open box and smiled through tears.
“You still don’t know,” she said.
May you like
Maya lifted her head.
Victoria whispered, “Rose recorded everything.”
