Chapter 12 - WhitehavenThe words made no sense.

Failed experiment.
Arthur Sterling had been called many things—tycoon, predator, murderer, genius, monster.
But not that.
Reyes kept her voice steady.
“Explain.”
Celeste smiled like a teacher pleased with a slow student.
“Power is not inherited. It is trained. My father believed Sterling children had to be shaped before the world softened them.”
Vivian felt Clara’s hand slip into hers.
Celeste continued.
“Arthur was always emotional. Impulsive. Desperate for approval. Theodore was worse—moral, soft, sentimental. Mason was useless.” She paused. “I was the only success.”
Reyes studied her.
“You’re confessing to crimes?”
“I am explaining context.”
“You ran an illegal confinement wing.”
Celeste’s smile did not move.
“No. I provided discretion to families who could afford it.”
Vivian’s voice cut through the room.
“You mean you helped Arthur threaten women.”
Celeste turned her gaze slowly to Vivian.
“Women like you always mistake weakness for virtue.”
Vivian’s grip tightened around Clara’s hand.
For years, Arthur’s cruelty had been loud. Explosive. Demanding.
Celeste’s cruelty was quiet enough to freeze the air.
Reyes placed Noah’s photograph on the table.
“Where is Noah Price?”
Celeste glanced at it.
“Safe.”
Reyes leaned forward.
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you’re getting without a deal.”
Vivian stood.
“No deal.”
Everyone looked at her.
Vivian’s face was pale, but her voice was firm.
“No more Sterling deals. No more trades. No more secrets exchanged behind closed doors.”
Celeste looked amused.
“Careful, Vivian. You are standing in a house built by secrets, wearing a name protected by secrets, living because Helena kept secrets.”
“Helena kept proof,” Vivian said. “There’s a difference.”
For the first time, Celeste’s smile faded.
Clara stepped forward.
“You’re the woman in white.”
Celeste’s eyes lowered to her niece.
“And you are the child who thinks truth is a weapon.”
Clara shook her head.
“No. Truth is a door.”
Celeste’s expression sharpened.
Clara reached into her pocket and placed the small gold key on the table.
Celeste’s face changed.
Barely.
But everyone saw it.
Reyes looked at the key.
“What does it open?”
Clara kept her eyes on Celeste.
“Grandma said when the woman in white lies, show her the key.”
Celeste whispered, “That old witch.”
Clara said, “It opens Room Twelve.”
Celeste stood so fast her chair hit the wall.
Reyes’s hand moved to her sidearm.
Vivian pulled Clara back.
May you like
Celeste’s mask slipped completely.
“You stupid child,” she hissed. “Room Twelve is where Helena buried the truth about you.”
