Chapter 4 - Mason’s ChoiceMason Sterling had spent his entire life standing one step behind Arthur.

At family dinners.
At board meetings.
At funerals.
In photographs.
Arthur always stood in the center, smiling like he owned the world. Mason stood near the edge, polite and quiet, pretending he did not know where the bodies were buried.
But tonight, in the west wing, the silence finally demanded a price.
Arthur looked at his brother.
“Give me the ledger.”
Mason’s gun remained pointed toward Vivian, but his eyes were not cruel.
They were terrified.
Arthur noticed.
“Don’t disappoint me now.”
Mason whispered, “She’s a child.”
Arthur tilted his head. “She is a Sterling.”
Clara lifted her chin. “I’m not yours anymore.”
The words hit the room harder than any weapon could have.
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
Vivian pulled Clara close.
Arthur stepped forward.
Mason moved suddenly.
He turned the gun away from Vivian and aimed it at Arthur.
Everyone froze.
Arthur stared at him.
“You stupid little coward.”
Mason’s voice broke. “I helped you once.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
Mason continued, louder now. “I signed the false statement after Theodore died. I told police he had been drinking. I told them he was unstable. I lied because you said the family would collapse.”
Arthur’s face darkened.
Vivian realized the hidden cameras in the hallway were still on.
So did Mason.
He looked toward one of them.
“And then Arthur destroyed the evidence. He paid the medical examiner. He threatened Theodore’s wife until she disappeared.”
Downstairs, gasps rose through the old vents.
Arthur lunged.
Mason fired.
The bullet struck the marble floor near Arthur’s shoe.
Arthur stopped.
Mason’s hands shook violently.
“I won’t miss twice.”
For the first time, Arthur Sterling stepped back.
But he was not beaten.
He smiled slowly.
“You think confession makes you clean?”
Mason’s face crumpled.
“No.”
Arthur raised his voice.
“You think anyone downstairs cares about justice? They care about money. Mine. Theirs. The company. Their seats. Their secrets. If I fall, half this house burns with me.”
Vivian felt the truth of it.
Arthur had not built an empire alone.
He had built a cage large enough for everyone.
Then Clara held up the phone again.
“Not everyone downstairs,” she said.
Arthur looked at her.
Clara tapped the screen.
A new voice came through the mansion speakers.
“This is Detective Elena Reyes with the State Bureau of Investigation. Arthur Sterling, we are outside your gates with a warrant.”
Arthur went still.
Clara’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed steady.
“I called them three days ago.”
Arthur whispered, “You don’t know what you’ve done.”
May you like
Clara answered, “Yes, I do.”
Then the front gates exploded open.
