Chapter 12 - THE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED THE FIRE

Atlas moved before the lights returned. He pushed Lily behind a metal cabinet and stood facing the corridor.

A shadow crossed the emergency exit.

Grant raised his weapon. "Mara, take the child."

The shadow entered.

It was not the janitor. It was a woman with short gray hair and a scar across her cheek. She wore a hospital coat and held no weapon.

"My name is Dr. Naomi Reed," she said. "I delivered Evelyn's baby."

Claire kept Lily behind her. "How do we know you are telling the truth?"

Dr. Reed looked at the birth certificate. "Because I wrote the original name. Elena Rose Whitmore."

Mara kept her weapon raised. "Why did someone change it?"

"Henry ordered me to record the baby as stillborn. Victor helped me remove her from the hospital. Rose took her. Claire was brought to us after the carriage accident."

Claire felt memory return in fragments. A hospital ceiling. Rose's red scarf. A baby crying. A man in yellow gloves standing beside a burning car.

"The man in the yellow gloves," she whispered.

Dr. Reed nodded. "He was Henry's driver. He started the fire after the crash. He thought both children were dead."

Lily began trembling.

"I saw him," she said. "He had a shiny ring."

Dr. Reed looked toward the door. "Then the two of you are the final witnesses."

Grant asked, "Why did you wait so long?"

"Because I was afraid. Every person who tried to expose Henry disappeared. I kept the archive hidden because I believed one day someone would return for it."

The hospital alarm began ringing.

Mara checked her phone. "The police are arriving, but the security system says there is an active hostage situation upstairs."

Dr. Reed looked frightened. "Henry came here."

Atlas barked toward the stairwell.

They moved through the hospital service corridors. On the third floor, nurses were being held in a treatment room. Henry stood in the hallway with Miriam beside him.

"You found the doctor," Henry said. "That saves me the trouble of searching."

Grant positioned himself between Henry and Claire. "It is over."

Henry laughed. "You still think evidence matters. People like me do not fall because of documents. They fall only when the people they control stop obeying."

He looked at Grant. "You will not shoot your father."

Grant's hand tightened.

Lily stepped beside Atlas. "He is not your father."

Henry looked down at her. "What did you say?"

"He smells like the basement."

Atlas lunged.

Miriam fired. Grant knocked her aim aside. The bullet struck the ceiling. Dr. Reed pulled the nurses out of the room while Mara tackled Henry.

Henry fought with surprising strength. He struck Mara and reached for Lily.

Atlas caught his sleeve.

The dog pulled him away from the child. Henry fell against the wall, screaming that Atlas was a worthless animal.

The insult changed something in the dog's posture. Atlas released the sleeve and stood still.

Henry smiled, believing he had won.

Then Atlas turned toward the nurses and barked.

Mara understood. "The explosives."

She searched the hallway and found wires beneath a medical cart. The bomb was not in the building. It was attached to the hospital's emergency generator.

If it detonated, the entire basement archive would burn.

Dr. Reed ran downstairs to protect the evidence.

Claire followed with Lily. Atlas raced ahead.

The generator room was filling with smoke. A yellow-gloved hand disappeared behind the machinery.

The janitor had returned.

He pulled a cable.

The generator exploded.

Claire fell over Lily. Atlas threw his body across them as flames swept the room.

Grant arrived and dragged Claire out. Mara pulled Dr. Reed from the smoke.

The janitor escaped through a broken service door.

But Lily was holding something.

A gold ring.

It carried a black stone shaped like a star.

"He dropped it," she whispered.

Dr. Reed stared at the ring. "That belonged to Henry's driver."

Henry, handcuffed in the corridor, looked at it.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

"Where did you get that?" he asked.

Lily held it tightly.

"The fire man gave it to me."

Henry stopped struggling.

From outside came the sound of approaching sirens.

Miriam looked at Henry. "You said he was dead."

May you like

Henry did not answer.

Dr. Reed whispered, "Elias Vane is alive."
