Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN DEAD TWICE

Elias Vane was found in an abandoned train station forty miles from the estate. He had been living beneath the name Samuel Price, repairing clocks and sleeping in a locked office behind the ticket counter.

When Mara showed him the black-star ring, he began to cry.

"He found us," Elias said.

"Who?" Grant asked.

"The driver. His name is Caleb Rusk. Henry's most loyal killer."

Elias explained that Caleb had been ordered to destroy the evidence after Evelyn's murder. He started the fire at the carriage site, then spent years hunting Rose, Claire, and Lily. Henry believed Caleb died in a warehouse fire, but Elias knew he had escaped.

"Why did you hide?" Claire asked.

"Because I helped Henry build the accounts. I knew every payment. Every judge. Every name. I believed if I vanished, the violence would stop. It only gave them time."

He handed Mara a ledger bound in brown leather.

The ledger contained payments to police officers, lawyers, politicians, and private security firms. On the final page was an account under the name BLACK STAR.

The account had one recent transaction.

The payment was made the previous night.

The recipient was Grant Whitmore.

Grant stared at the page. "I never received this money."

Mara studied the signature. "Someone used your identity."

Elias pointed to the transaction code. "The authorization came from the estate."

Claire remembered Victor's blood-soaked shirt and the transmitter. "Someone inside sent it."

Grant called the estate. No one answered.

They returned to Whitmore House under police escort. The main gate stood open. Snow blew across the courtyard. The mansion looked abandoned.

Atlas stopped before the entrance.

Lily held his collar. "He hears someone upstairs."

Grant entered with his weapon raised. The hall was empty except for the portraits. One painting had been removed from the wall.

Behind it was a message carved into the plaster.

THE HEIR MUST CHOOSE THE KINGDOM.

Claire hated the word heir. Lily was not a kingdom. She was a little girl who liked strawberry milk and sleeping beside Atlas.

Mara found a trail of blood leading toward the study.

Inside, Victor was tied to a chair. His wound had reopened. Beside him lay the missing painting.

"Where is Henry?" Grant asked.

Victor lifted his head. "He took Julian."

Claire's heart stopped. "Where is my brother?"

"The old quarry. Caleb is with him."

Victor handed Grant a phone. A video showed Julian kneeling in the snow beside a quarry lake. Henry stood behind him. Caleb Rusk wore yellow gloves and the black-star ring was missing from his hand.

"Bring the ledger," Henry said in the video. "Bring the child. If you bring the police, Julian dies."

The video ended.

Grant looked at Claire. "You stay here."

"No."

"The quarry is dangerous."

"My daughter is being used as a hostage. I am going."

Lily placed her hand on Atlas's head. "He is going too."

Grant looked at the dog. Atlas did not growl. He simply waited.

The convoy drove to the quarry at dusk. Snow covered the abandoned machinery. The lake below was frozen except for a dark opening near the center.

Henry stood beside Julian at the edge.

Caleb held a rifle.

"The ledger," Henry called.

Mara held it up. "Release Julian first."

Henry smiled. "You still think this is a negotiation."

Caleb pointed at Lily. "Send the girl."

Claire tightened her arms around her daughter.

Atlas stepped forward.

Caleb raised the rifle.

Lily whispered, "He is afraid of Atlas."

The dog lowered his head and moved through the snow. Caleb fired into the air. Atlas did not stop.

Grant fired at Caleb's rifle. It fell from his hands.

Henry shoved Julian toward the hole in the ice.

Claire screamed.

Atlas reached Caleb first. He struck the man's legs, sending him down. Mara and the officers surrounded him.

Grant crossed the ice toward Henry.

Henry grabbed Julian by the coat. "One more step and your brother goes under."

Julian looked at Grant. "Do not stop."

Henry pulled him toward the hole.

The ice cracked.

Grant lunged.

Julian fell through.

Atlas reached the edge and grabbed Julian's coat in his teeth.

Grant pulled the dog backward. Together they dragged Julian from the freezing water.

Henry ran toward the quarry road.

Claire picked up the black-star ring Caleb had dropped. Inside the ring was a tiny engraved number.

The number matched the final page of Elias's ledger.

It was not an account number.

It was a date.

The date was tomorrow.

Mara read the ledger again. "There is a planned transfer. Henry is moving the entire network tomorrow night."

Grant looked toward the road where Henry had disappeared.

May you like

"Then we end it tomorrow."

Above them, a camera clicked from the quarry trees.
