Chapter 6 - THE GREENHOUSE BELOW THE ESTATE

The tunnel smelled of wet stone, rust, and the sharp chemical scent Lily had noticed on the intruders. Grant moved first, his weapon raised. Mara followed with one hand on the shoulder of the captured man. Claire kept Lily close while Atlas walked beside them, his body brushing the walls.

"How long is this passage?" Grant asked.

"Long enough to reach the greenhouse. There are two exits," Victor said.

Grant's voice hardened. "Stop saying my brother's name as if that explains everything."

Victor glanced over his shoulder. "It explains why the passage exists. It does not explain why he needed to hide it."

They reached a steel door. Victor pressed his palm against the lock. Nothing happened.

The captured man smiled.

"The second code changed."

Mara pushed him against the wall. "Give it to us."

"You think I know it?"

Atlas stepped closer.

The man looked at the dog and lost his smile.

"The code is the whistle," Victor said. "Three notes descending."

He whistled.

The steel door unlocked.

Beyond it was not the greenhouse. It was a circular chamber filled with old monitors, dusty filing cabinets, and shelves of labeled boxes. One monitor still glowed.

On the screen was a live image of Claire and Lily.

The camera angle came from somewhere inside the tunnel.

Claire pulled Lily behind her. "How long have they been watching us?"

Victor did not answer.

Grant searched the room. On one wall hung a large map of the Whitmore estate. Red lines connected the greenhouse, library, servants' wing, and a building beyond the north wall.

"That building was demolished," Grant said.

"The records say it was demolished."

Mara opened a cabinet. Inside were files arranged by date. The oldest file was labeled EVELYN. The newest was labeled LILY.

Claire reached for it.

Grant caught her wrist. "Wait."

"It is about my daughter."

"Which is why you do not open it without knowing what is inside."

Claire looked at him. "Everyone keeps deciding what I am allowed to know. Rose did it. Victor did it. Your family did it. I am done waiting for someone to explain my life."

She opened the file.

The first page was a photograph of Claire as a baby.

The second was a medical record with her birth date.

The third was a note written in Rose's handwriting.

CLAIRE IS THE PROTECTOR. LILY IS THE HEIR.

Claire could not breathe.

"Heir to what?" Mara asked.

Beneath the note was a sealed envelope. Claire broke it open.

Inside was a small memory card and a letter.

My dear Claire,

If you are reading this, the Whitmores have found you. I wanted to tell you everything, but truth is dangerous when people are still hunting the child. Lily's father was not Thomas Bennett. Thomas was the name we used to hide the identity of Julian Whitmore. Julian survived the warehouse fire, but he was badly injured and forced to disappear. He loved Evelyn. He believed their child was dead. You must find him before the others do.

Claire lowered the letter.

Grant stared at her. "Julian is alive?"

Victor's silence answered.

The captured man suddenly attacked Mara. He drove his shoulder into her and ran toward the rear exit. Atlas intercepted him. The dog did not bite. He knocked the man into a cabinet and pinned him until the guards reached them.

Grant took the memory card.

"Where is my brother?"

Victor looked at the monitors. "He has been hiding under another name."

"Where?"

"I do not know."

Grant grabbed his collar. "You worked with him."

"I worked for him. That is different."

A door slammed somewhere beyond the chamber.

The monitors switched on simultaneously.

Every screen showed the same image: a man sitting in a dark room, his face hidden by shadow. A white bandage covered the left side of his head.

His voice came through the speakers.

"Grant."

Grant went still.

"Julian?"

The man laughed once, painfully.

"You always were the last to understand."

Claire stepped closer to the screen. "Where is Lily's evidence?"

"You have it."

"The memory card?"

"No. The child remembers more than she knows."

Lily looked up. "I remember the lady singing."

The screen flickered.

Julian's voice softened. "She remembers Evelyn's lullaby."

Grant stared at him. "If you are alive, why did you leave your daughter with strangers?"

"I did not. I believed she died. Victor told me the baby was gone."

Victor closed his eyes.

Julian continued. "The people who killed Evelyn wanted the evidence. They had already infiltrated the Whitmore organization. I thought disappearing would protect the family. Instead, it made me useless."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"You needed to believe it. Your father was watching you."

Grant's face tightened. Their father, Henry Whitmore, had been dead for eight years. Yet the room suddenly felt as if he were still present.

Julian's image turned toward the camera. "Henry did not die before he knew about Lily. He hid a final account in the house. The account contains the names of everyone who helped him. One of those names belongs to the person standing beside you."

Every eye turned toward Victor.

Victor did not deny it.

"I was on the list," he said. "I helped Henry move money before I understood what he was doing. When I tried to leave, he threatened Evelyn."

Grant's hand moved toward his weapon.

Victor raised both hands. "I never killed her."

"But you lied to me."

"I lied to keep you alive."

The monitors went black.

Then the chamber doors began to close.

Grant shoved Claire toward the tunnel. "Move!"

Atlas barked and seized the captured man's jacket, dragging him through the narrowing gap. Mara followed. Victor escaped just before the steel doors sealed.

On the other side, someone began firing.

Bullets struck the door.

Claire ran with Lily in her arms. Atlas limped beside her. Behind them, Victor shouted that the passage was flooding.

Water burst through the ceiling.

The tunnel began filling from the far end.

Grant grabbed Claire's hand. "The greenhouse exit is ahead."

The whistle sounded behind them.

Atlas stopped.

Claire turned. "Atlas!"

The dog stood in the rising water, facing the darkness. His ears lifted. He was listening to a sound no one else could hear.

Then he ran back.

He disappeared into the tunnel.

Lily began crying. "He is going to get hurt."

Grant tried to follow, but Claire caught his arm.

"The door is closing."

Atlas returned seconds later with a small metal box clenched between his teeth. He dropped it at Lily's feet.

The box carried the same silver star engraved on her bracelet.

The greenhouse exit opened above them.

They climbed into the snow as water roared beneath the floor.

Behind the glass walls, the plants were dead and frozen. In the center stood a stone table. Lily placed the box on it.

The lid opened when she touched the star.

Inside was a single recording device.

It began playing before anyone could stop it.

Evelyn's voice filled the greenhouse.

"If Lily is alive, then someone betrayed us."

She paused.

"The betrayer is not the one you fear most. It is the person who believes he is saving you."

The recording ended.

Grant looked at Victor.

Victor looked at Atlas.

Outside the greenhouse, the first sirens approached.

May you like

But the sound was not coming from police cars.

It was coming from the north road, where three black vehicles were crossing the estate boundary.
