Chapter 10 - The School CallThe call came on Friday morning.

Nathan was at work when Emma’s preschool director, Mrs. Alvarez, asked him to come immediately.
Her voice was calm, but something underneath it was not.
When Nathan arrived, Emma was sitting in the office with a blanket around her shoulders.
Rachel sat in another chair, pale and silent.
Patricia stood near the window, furious.
Mrs. Alvarez closed the office door.
“Mr. Cole, thank you for coming.”
Nathan knelt in front of Emma first.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Emma leaned into him.
“What happened?” he asked.
Mrs. Alvarez answered carefully.
“Mrs. Whitman attempted to sign Emma out.”
Nathan looked at Patricia.
“You’re not authorized.”
Patricia lifted her chin. “I’m her grandmother.”
“You’re not authorized.”
“She was crying.”
“She cries because of you.”
Rachel flinched.
Patricia pointed at him. “This is harassment. You are poisoning that child against her family.”
Mrs. Alvarez’s voice became firm.
“Mrs. Whitman, please stop.”
The room went quiet.
The director placed a printed sheet on the desk.
“Our staff followed the custody and pickup instructions on file. Mrs. Whitman became upset when we declined release. Emma overheard raised voices and became distressed.”
Nathan looked at Rachel.
“You were here?”
Rachel nodded faintly.
“And you let your mother try to take her?”
“I didn’t know she was going to.”
Patricia snapped, “I was trying to fix this mess.”
Nathan stood.
“No. You were trying to get around a legal order.”
Patricia’s face reddened. “You think a piece of paper makes you a father?”
Nathan’s voice was low.
“No. Emma does.”
The words landed hard.
Mrs. Alvarez looked at Rachel.
“Ms. Harper, we need clear communication moving forward. Emma cannot be placed in the middle of adult conflict.”
Rachel covered her face.
Patricia scoffed.
But Emma spoke before anyone else could.
“I don’t want Grandma to yell at school.”
Everyone froze.
The little girl’s voice was tiny, but steady.
“I just want my birthday back.”
Rachel began to cry.
Nathan picked Emma up.
This time, no one tried to stop him.
But as he walked out, Mrs. Alvarez quietly handed him a copy of the incident report.
