Chapter 16 - Mason’s MistakeMason made his mistake on a Tuesday.

He called Nathan directly.

No attorney.

No Rachel.

No charming audience.

Nathan answered while standing in his garage, sanding an old rocking chair he planned to repaint for Emma’s reading corner.

Mason’s voice was sharp.

“You need to tell Rachel to stop.”

Nathan wiped dust from his hands. “Stop what?”

“Spreading private information.”

“You mean the emails?”

A pause.

So Mason knew.

Nathan smiled without humor.

“You and Patricia discussed my daughter’s trust.”

“You’re making it sound worse than it is.”

“It is worse than it sounds.”

Mason exhaled. “Listen carefully. I was trying to create a stable financial structure.”

“For yourself?”

“For Rachel’s household.”

“You were not part of Rachel’s household.”

“I was going to be.”

“No,” Nathan said. “You were auditioning.”

Mason’s calm slipped.

“You think you’re untouchable because people feel sorry for the single dad routine?”

Nathan glanced toward the driveway, making sure Emma was still inside with Grace.

“I think you should talk to your attorney before you say something stupid.”

Mason laughed.

“You don’t have the money to fight everyone forever.”

Nathan switched the call to speaker and opened his recording app on the workbench tablet.

“Say that again.”

Mason did.

And more.

He talked about draining Nathan emotionally. About Patricia’s plan to make him look unstable. About Rachel being “too soft” to manage the transition. About Emma being young enough to “forget the conflict” once Nathan was reduced to occasional visits.

Nathan let him talk.

Men like Mason loved the sound of themselves winning.

When the call ended, Nathan sent the file to Lena.

Her reply came almost instantly.

This is gold.

The next day, Mason’s attorney contacted Lena requesting a private settlement discussion.

Lena declined.

Rachel filed a police report about Patricia’s assault.

The court scheduled a follow-up hearing.

And Mason Reed, who had wanted to step into Emma’s life as the new father figure, suddenly became the man whose own words proved the plan.

Nathan finished sanding the rocking chair that night.

Emma helped paint the first coat.

She chose yellow.

“Because yellow feels safe,” she said.

May you like

Nathan smiled.

For the first time in weeks, he believed safe might become real again.
