Chapter 6 - Rachel At The DoorRachel came alone that evening.

No Patricia.
No Mason.
No relatives filming with phones.
Just Rachel standing on Nathan’s porch in the same maroon dress, now wrinkled at the hem. Her makeup was gone. Her eyes looked swollen.
Nathan opened the door but did not invite her in.
“Is Emma asleep?” she asked.
“Yes.”
Rachel wrapped her arms around herself. “Can we talk?”
“About the paper? The video? Or your mother telling our daughter I might disappear if I didn’t behave?”
Rachel’s face crumpled.
“She recorded that?”
“Mr. Buttons did.”
Rachel looked past him into the house, shame spreading across her face.
“I didn’t want it to happen like that.”
Nathan’s laugh was quiet and empty. “But you wanted it to happen.”
“No.”
“You brought the papers.”
“My mother did.”
“You let her.”
Rachel’s mouth trembled.
For years, Nathan had watched Patricia speak through Rachel. He knew the difference between Rachel angry and Rachel afraid. Tonight she was afraid.
“Why?” he asked.
Rachel looked down.
“Mason wants to marry me.”
“I know that part.”
“He said he didn’t want to be a stepfather with no authority.”
Nathan stared at her.
“So he wanted my custody reduced.”
“He said Emma needed consistency.”
“He met her twice.”
Rachel flinched.
Nathan stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind him so Emma would not hear if she woke.
“Rachel, look at me.”
She did.
“Did you agree to let Mason adopt her?”
“No,” she said quickly.
But too quickly.
Nathan’s stomach sank.
“Rachel.”
“He talked about it,” she admitted. “My mother said it would make things easier later.”
“Easier for who?”
“For Emma.”
“No. For you. For Mason. For Patricia. Not for Emma.”
Rachel’s tears spilled over.
“You don’t understand what it’s like being my mother’s daughter.”
Nathan’s voice softened, but only slightly.
“I understand what it’s like watching my daughter become afraid of losing me because adults are too weak to protect her.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Inside, a floorboard creaked.
Both of them turned.
Emma stood in the hallway, barefoot, clutching Mr. Buttons.
“Mommy?” she whispered.
Rachel moved toward her.
Emma stepped behind Nathan.
Rachel stopped as if someone had slapped her.
Nathan looked at Rachel, and the truth settled between them.

The damage was no longer invisible.
It was standing in pajamas, hiding behind her father.
