Chapter 1 - The Slap That Shattered the HouseFor three long seconds after Marcus struck Victoria, the hallway forgot how to breathe.

The sound of the slap still seemed to hang in the air, sharp and impossible, bouncing between the polished oak floors, the framed oil paintings, and the crystal lights above them. Elena stood frozen against the wall with Leo pressed to her chest, one hand cupping the back of his tiny head while the other wrapped protectively across his body.

The baby cried harder.

Not loudly. Not wildly. Just in frightened little bursts that made Elena’s throat tighten.

Victoria stared at Marcus as if he had become a stranger wearing her husband’s face.

“You hit me,” she whispered.

Marcus did not look sorry.

His hand lowered slowly to his side, his jaw locked so tightly the muscles in his cheek shifted.

“I stopped you,” he said.

Victoria’s eyes filled instantly. It was so quick, so practiced, that Elena almost felt dizzy watching it. One heartbeat earlier, Victoria had been red-faced with rage, threatening prison, reaching for a terrified infant as though the child were property. Now she looked wounded, fragile, elegant, tragic.

“You stopped me?” Victoria repeated, pressing trembling fingers to her cheek. “Marcus, she was stealing my son.”

Elena flinched at the word.

My son.

Victoria said it like Leo belonged to her by divine law.

Marcus’s gaze finally moved from his wife to the baby carrier strapped to Elena’s chest. His eyes softened for half a second when he saw Leo’s crumpled little face.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “take him to the blue nursery.”

Victoria snapped her head toward him.

“No.”

Marcus did not blink.

“Elena. Go.”

Elena hesitated. Her legs felt weak, and the hallway seemed too long. Victoria stood between her and the staircase leading toward the nursery wing.

Marcus noticed.

He stepped aside, creating a clear path.

Victoria moved as if she might block her again, but Marcus’s voice cut through the air.

“Do not take one more step toward that child.”

The cold authority in his tone made even Victoria stop.

Elena moved quickly, but not fast enough to jostle Leo. She kept one hand over his back and whispered, “It’s okay, baby. I’ve got you. You’re safe.”

As she passed Marcus, his voice dropped.

“Lock the nursery door.”

Elena looked at him.

The command was not for comfort.

It was fear.

A terrible realization settled in her chest.

Marcus was not simply angry.

He had expected something like this.

Behind her, Victoria let out a broken laugh.

“Lock the nursery door?” she repeated. “Against me? Against his mother?”

Marcus turned toward her fully.

“You are not going near him again until I know exactly what you were planning.”

The tears disappeared from Victoria’s eyes.

Just like that.

Her face changed so quickly that Elena, halfway down the hall, nearly stopped walking.

“What I was planning?” Victoria asked softly.

Marcus reached inside his suit jacket and pulled out his phone.

“I saw the bags in the east garage.”

Victoria went still.

“Marcus—”

“Two suitcases. Leo’s passport. A private pediatrician’s file. Cash. Your mother’s driver waiting outside the gate.”

Elena’s blood went cold.

Leo whimpered against her chest.

Victoria’s mouth parted, but no words came out.

Marcus stepped closer to her.

“You told me this morning you were taking him for a walk in the garden.”

Victoria’s fingers curled.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“You were leaving the country with my son.”

Elena felt the floor tilt beneath her.

She turned the corner before Victoria could see the shock on her face, but she heard the woman’s voice follow her down the corridor.

“He is safer with me than he will ever be with you.”

Elena stopped at the nursery door.

Her hand shook as she entered the code Marcus had given her the first week she worked at the estate.

The lock clicked open.

She stepped inside, closed the door, and turned the deadbolt.

Only then did she allow herself to look down at Leo.

His little fists were curled against her uniform.

His eyes were wet and wide.

“You poor thing,” Elena whispered. “What has she been doing to you?”

Outside, somewhere down the hallway, Victoria screamed Marcus’s name.

Then something shattered.

May you like

And Elena realized the afternoon had not ended.

It had only begun.
