Chapter 15 - The Resignation LetterElena’s resignation letter was folded into a perfect square.

Marcus found it exactly where she said it would be, tucked inside the pocket of her spare apron hanging in the nursery closet.

He did not open it at first.

He stood beside Leo’s crib while the baby slept, holding the paper like something fragile enough to cut him.

Elena watched from the rocking chair.

“You should read it.”

“I don’t want to.”

“That doesn’t change what it says.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Were you going to leave without telling me?”

“I was going to tell Mrs. Hale.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Elena looked at Leo.

“Yes.”

Pain flickered across his face.

“Why?”

“Because I know how this looks.”

“It looks like you were lied to.”

“It looks like the maid became biologically connected to the heir of one of the richest families in the country.”

Marcus said nothing.

Elena’s voice shook.

“It looks like motive.”

He opened the letter.

She looked away while he read.

It was not long. She had written it before dawn, after Margaret told her the truth in the chapel behind the estate gardens.

Mr. Vance,

I am grateful for the opportunity to work in your home. Due to personal circumstances I cannot explain without causing harm to your family, I believe it is best that I leave immediately. Leo is a beautiful child. Please protect his gentleness. He startles when voices rise. He likes the blue blanket best. He sleeps better if someone hums softly before putting him down.

Please do not let anyone make him feel like a possession.

Elena Reyes

Marcus lowered the letter.

For a moment, he could not speak.

“You were leaving to protect him.”

“I thought distance would protect him.”

“You were wrong.”

“I know that now.”

He folded the letter again, but he did not give it back.

A quiet knock came.

Margaret entered.

Her face had aged ten years since morning.

“Victoria is being transferred to a hotel under police supervision,” she said. “Celeste will remain in custody overnight.”

Marcus nodded.

Margaret looked at Elena.

“I owe you an apology.”

Elena stood.

“No, Mrs. Vance.”

“Yes.” Margaret’s voice was firm. “I used your truth as a test. I watched you suffer through it today because I needed to know whether you were safe for Leo.”

Marcus’s eyes sharpened.

“You did what?”

Margaret looked at him.

“I have buried one daughter-in-law because I trusted too slowly and acted too late. I will not apologize for caution.”

“But you will apologize for cruelty,” Elena said quietly.

Margaret met her eyes.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

That simple admission seemed to surprise Marcus.

Elena sat again.

Margaret moved toward the crib.

“Leo has three truths now,” she said. “Amelia carried him and loved him. Marcus is his father. Elena gave him life without knowing his name.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

Margaret looked at her.

“No court should turn that into ugliness. But Victoria will try.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She has no grounds.”

“She has rage,” Margaret said. “That is sometimes enough to begin a war.”

As if summoned by the word, Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face hardened.

“What is it?” Elena asked.

“A message from Victoria.”

He opened it.

Elena saw only one line before Marcus locked the screen.

You took my son, so I’ll take your reputation first.

Within minutes, the first headline appeared online.

BILLIONAIRE’S MAID ACCUSED OF TRYING TO STEAL HIS BABY AFTER SECRET DNA LINK REVEALED.

Elena sat down slowly.

Marcus whispered, “No.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Victoria had left the estate.

May you like

But she had opened the gates of something far worse.

Public hunger.
