Chapter 4 - The Maid With a PastElena heard Marcus’s question, but the room seemed to pull away from her.

What does she mean by that?

Leo cried against her chest, and she focused on the sound because it was easier than looking at Marcus’s face.

“I don’t know,” she said.

The lie came too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

Of course he noticed. Men like Marcus Vance did not build empires by missing the half-second tremor before a person hid the truth.

“Elena.”

She hated the way he said her name. Not cruelly. Not loudly. Almost gently.

That was worse.

“I said I don’t know.”

The intercom buzzed again. Victoria’s mother, Celeste Whitmore, spoke from somewhere beyond the nursery wing.

“Ask your little maid why she left New Haven under another name.”

Elena’s heart stopped.

Marcus stared at her.

The silence in the nursery changed.

It no longer belonged to Leo.

It belonged to Elena.

“Turn it off,” she whispered.

Marcus did.

But the damage had already entered the room.

Leo’s cries softened into tiny hiccups. Elena held him tighter, not because she was afraid he would fall, but because she suddenly felt as though everything beneath her feet had vanished.

Marcus took one slow step closer.

“Another name?”

Elena’s eyes burned.

“It has nothing to do with Leo.”

“That woman thinks it does.”

“That woman would use anything.”

“I agree.” His voice was controlled. “So tell me before she does.”

Elena looked toward the window. Beyond the nursery glass, the estate lawns stretched impossibly green and peaceful. She wondered how many terrible things had happened in beautiful houses simply because beauty convinced everyone not to look closely.

“My name used to be Elena Marquez,” she said.

Marcus waited.

“Now it’s Elena Reyes.”

“Why?”

She swallowed.

“Because a family I worked for in New Haven accused me of stealing from them.”

Marcus’s face remained unreadable.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Were you charged?”

“No. They didn’t want police. They wanted silence.” She gave a bitter smile. “Rich people often do.”

Marcus said nothing.

Elena forced herself to continue.

“Their oldest son hurt one of the housekeepers. She was seventeen. I found her crying in the laundry room. I helped her leave. I took photos of the bruises. I contacted her aunt.”

Marcus’s expression shifted.

“They accused you of theft to discredit you.”

“And threatened immigration trouble for my uncle. Threatened my sister’s job. Threatened everyone.” Elena looked down at Leo. “So I disappeared. Changed my name legally through marriage, then divorced. Took whatever work I could get.”

Marcus’s eyes sharpened.

“Victoria knew?”

“I don’t know how.”

“But Celeste does.”

Elena laughed once, softly and without humor.

“Women like Celeste Whitmore always know where the bodies are buried.”

Marcus turned toward the closed nursery door.

“Then she dug this up for a reason.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

Elena had no answer.

Then Leo reached up and grabbed a small silver chain around Elena’s neck.

Marcus noticed it.

The necklace was simple. Almost nothing. A tiny oval locket worn smooth from years of touch.

Elena gently removed Leo’s fingers from it.

Marcus’s gaze stayed there.

“Who is in the locket?”

“No one important.”

“Elena.”

Her voice hardened.

“You asked about my name. I answered. Do not ask for pieces of me I did not offer.”

For a moment, Marcus looked less like a billionaire owner of a grand estate and more like a man who had been struck by a truth he deserved.

He nodded.

“Fair.”

A knock came at the nursery door.

Both adults turned.

“Mr. Vance,” called a guard from the hallway. “Police are at the front entrance.”

Victoria had moved faster than expected.

Marcus looked at Elena.

“When they ask what happened, tell the truth.”

Elena almost laughed.

“The truth doesn’t protect women like me.”

Marcus moved toward the door.

“Today it will.”

But as he opened it, a second voice rang from the hallway.

Victoria.

Calm now. Terribly calm.

“Officers, there she is.”

Elena saw two uniformed police officers behind Marcus.

Victoria stood between them with one hand pressed to her reddened cheek.

Then she pointed straight at Elena.

“That woman attacked me and tried to take my baby.”
