Chapter 10 - The Funeral Director’s SecretMr. Harlan survived because fear made him clever.

When Daniel’s man entered the funeral home office, Harlan pretended to faint. He dropped hard, cracking his head against the desk badly enough to bleed.
The intruder searched the room, cursed, and fled when sirens approached.
By the time Detective Sloane reached the funeral home the next morning, Harlan was in the emergency room with six stitches and a mouth full of shame.
He told her everything.
Daniel paid him twenty-five thousand dollars in cash.
Daniel insisted Claire not be embalmed.
Daniel demanded the casket be sealed before the service.
Daniel entered the preparation room after midnight.
“And the camera file?” Sloane asked.
Harlan pointed to his mouth.
A nurse handed him a small plastic container.
Inside was the flash drive he had hidden under his tongue until police arrived.
Sloane almost smiled. “You understand this does not erase what you did.”
Harlan began to cry.
“I know.”
The footage changed the case.
It showed Daniel entering the funeral preparation room at 12:13 a.m. Claire lay motionless on a table, dressed in pale blue. Daniel stood over her for a long time.
Then Claire’s fingers moved.
Not much.
Just enough.
Daniel saw.
He leaned close.
The camera had no audio, but his mouth was clear enough for a lip reader.
Still fighting?
Then he took a syringe from his coat.
Noah watched the footage once and threw up in a trash can.
Claire watched it without blinking.
“That was the second dose,” she whispered.
Sloane looked at her. “Second?”
Claire nodded. “The first was in the tea.”
The lab results confirmed it two days later.
A paralytic compound. Rare. Difficult to trace. It could slow movement and mimic catastrophic neurological failure if combined with sedatives.
Claire had been awake enough to feel fear.
Not awake enough to move.
Noah stood beside her hospital bed when the report came in.
His face changed.
Something young left him.
“Where is Daniel?” Claire asked.
Sloane hesitated.
That hesitation answered.
The fire at the cabin destroyed half the evidence.

Daniel escaped before police surrounded the property.
And somewhere beyond the burned trees and sirens, Daniel Whitmore had vanished.
