Chapter 15 - Claire’s First LieClaire did not look surprised when Noah asked about his father.

That hurt more than if she had.

She was sitting upright for the first time since the funeral, a blanket over her legs, the hospital window glowing gray behind her.

Noah stood at the foot of the bed, still wearing the same hoodie from the hotel.

“Tell me Daniel was lying,” he said.

Claire closed her eyes.

Noah felt something in him break.

“Mom.”

“He was lying about many things,” she whispered.

“But not that.”

Her silence answered.

Noah stepped back. “Dad had a heart attack.”

“He did.”

“Then why did Daniel say—”

“Because your father was investigating the same money.”

Noah stared.

Claire explained slowly, painfully.

Years earlier, before the foundation became famous, a wealthy donor group offered a massive expansion grant. Claire was a teacher with a dream. Noah’s father, Michael, was an accountant. He checked the paperwork and found irregularities.

The donor network was moving money through charities to clean it.

Michael wanted to report it.

Claire wanted time.

“We fought,” she said. “The worst fight of our marriage.”

Noah’s voice shook. “And then he died.”

Tears ran down Claire’s face. “He collapsed two days later.”

“Did you know?”

“No. God, Noah, no. I didn’t know anyone hurt him.”

“But you suspected.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Noah turned away.

That was the real betrayal. Not certainty. Suspicion. Years of it.

“You let me believe it was natural.”

“I was afraid.”

“I was twelve.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.” His voice cracked. “You had a choice. I had a funeral.”

Claire reached for him, but he stepped back.

“I tried to protect you.”

He laughed, empty and sharp. “That sentence ruins children.”

The door opened. Detective Sloane entered with a folder, saw their faces, and paused.

“This can wait.”

“No,” Noah said. “Apparently nothing can.”

Sloane looked at Claire. “Daniel’s talking.”

Claire wiped her tears.

“What does he want?”

“A deal,” Sloane said. “He claims he can name the people behind the donor network.”

Noah looked at his mother.

“And what does he want in return?”

May you like

Sloane’s expression hardened.

“He wants Claire charged too.”
