Chapter 12 - The LocketThe locket was not in Claire’s hospital belongings.

It was not listed by the funeral home.

It was not in Daniel’s house.

It had vanished somewhere between the preparation room and the casket.

Noah blamed himself.

“I should have checked,” he said.

Claire reached for his hand. “You were saving my life.”

But Noah could not stop replaying the moment. The cracked lid. Her pale face. The torn note. Daniel’s hand near the mallet.

Had Daniel taken the locket then?

Detective Sloane reviewed chapel footage from every mourner’s phone she could obtain. Most videos were shaky, chaotic, filled with screams and movement.

Then one clip from the organist’s daughter showed something useful.

Daniel stepping toward the casket while everyone looked at Claire.

His left hand reaching inside.

His fingers closing around something silver.

Noah watched it three times.

“I’m going to kill him,” he said quietly.

Claire’s voice cut through the room. “No.”

He turned.

She looked weaker than ever, but her eyes had hardened.

“That is what he wants. Rage makes you easy to discredit.”

Noah’s jaw trembled. “He put you in a coffin.”

“And you opened it,” she said. “Now we finish this alive.”

Sloane traced Daniel’s likely escape. His accounts were frozen. Airports flagged. Cars tracked. But Daniel had planned for collapse. Men like him always did.

Then Elise remembered something.

“He owns nothing under his name,” she said. “But he loves old hotels.”

“Hotels?” Sloane asked.

“He buys failing ones through shell companies. Quiet places. Private exits. Cash staff.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed. “The Mayfair.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Daniel took me there once. He said old buildings keep secrets better than people.”

The Mayfair Hotel sat downtown, half-renovated, mostly empty, famous for its locked ballroom and rumors of bankruptcy.

Sloane sent units.

But Noah did not wait.

He knew he should.

He knew his mother was right.

But then an unknown number texted him a photo.

Claire’s silver locket resting on a hotel bar.

Under it, a message.

COME ALONE, OR MOM FINISHES THE FUNERAL.

Noah stood in the hospital hallway, staring at the screen.

For once, Daniel had made a mistake.

He thought Noah was still only a grieving son.

He did not know Noah had already started recording.
