Chapter 10 - The Trap Behind the GalaThe flash drive contained three recordings.

The first was Nolan’s voice.
Calm.
Calculating.
“If Raines loses control, the board panics. Investors hate volatility. We don’t need to beat him. We need him to look like the man everyone fears.”
Sloane’s voice replied, “And Clara?”
“She is the trigger.”
Clara listened without moving.
Dominic stood across the room, hands clenched at his sides.
Elise Monroe paused the recording.
“That is enough to establish intent.”
“No,” Clara said. “Play the rest.”
Dominic looked at her. “You don’t have to.”
“I do.”
The second recording was worse.
Nolan described Clara’s past, the shelter, her mother, the Adrian Vale incident. Details he should not have had.
Dominic’s voice dropped. “Who gave him that file?”
Elise’s face darkened. “Someone inside Raines Capital or Harbor Light.”
The third recording revealed the full plan.
Sloane would humiliate Clara.
Dominic would threaten Sloane or Nolan publicly.
Nolan’s team would leak old rumors.
The city council would delay Raines Capital’s pending development review.
Whitmore Development would step in as the “clean alternative.”
Clara closed her eyes.
It had never been about the dress.
It had been about using her pain as bait.
Dominic turned away, breathing hard.
Clara followed him into the hallway.
“Look at me,” she said.
He did not.
“Dominic.”
He faced her.
The rage in his eyes frightened her, but not because she feared him.
Because she feared what it cost him to hold it back.
“They used you,” he said.
“They tried.”
“I should have seen it.”
“No. Nolan planned this because he knew you would blame yourself afterward.”
Dominic looked wounded by the accuracy.
Clara touched his chest.
“Do not give him the man he wanted.”
His breath slowed.
Behind them, Elise stepped out.
“There’s more.”
Clara turned.
Elise held up a printed still from the gala security footage.
At the edge of the frame, near the service entrance, stood a man Clara recognized.
Dominic’s cousin.
Marco Raines.
Dominic went completely still.
Elise said, “He met Nolan twenty minutes before Sloane approached Clara.”

Clara looked at her husband’s face and knew this betrayal cut deeper than business.
It was family.
