Chapter 14 - The HearingThe city council hearing drew more cameras than a mayoral scandal.

Dominic arrived in a charcoal suit.
Clara walked beside him in white.
The message was deliberate.
No hiding.
No shame.
Inside the chamber, Nolan Whitmore sat with his attorneys, looking confident until he saw Sloane Harrington enter through the side doors.
She wore no diamonds.
No smile.
Only truth.
Maren Vale sat behind Clara with four other women.
Marco Raines did not appear.
That worried Dominic more than if he had.
The hearing began with questions about Raines Capital’s history, contracts, and Dominic’s past.
Dominic answered every question directly.
Yes, his family had criminal ties.
Yes, he had inherited dirty structures.
Yes, he had spent fifteen years dismantling them.
Yes, he welcomed an independent audit.
Nolan’s attorney smiled.
“And yet, Mr. Raines, when Ms. Harrington offended your wife, you immediately threatened her social and professional destruction, correct?”
Dominic leaned toward the microphone.
“I warned her not to touch my wife again.”
“Because you are accustomed to intimidating people?”
Clara’s hand tightened beneath the table.
Dominic replied, “Because I am accustomed to men excusing harm when victims lack status.”
The room murmured.
Then Nolan’s attorney turned.
“Mrs. Raines, were you previously employed by an escort-style hostess agency?”
The chamber exploded.
Dominic half rose.
Clara placed one hand on his arm.
“No threats,” she whispered.
Then she leaned into the microphone.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
“I worked there when I was young, poor, and trying to keep my mother housed. I also recorded evidence of corruption that exposed unsafe development practices connected to Elliot Whitmore.”
Nolan’s face changed.
Clara looked directly at him.
“That is why his son targeted me.”
Elise stood and submitted the recordings from Sloane’s flash drive.
Then Maren submitted the bribery emails.
Then Sloane testified.
By the time she finished, Nolan Whitmore no longer looked like a businessman.
He looked like a man watching the floor vanish beneath him.
Outside, news alerts began.

Dominic looked at Clara.
For the first time in days, he smiled.

Because she had stopped running.
