Chapter 11 - Blood Is Not LoyaltyMarco Raines arrived at the penthouse wearing arrogance like a tailored coat.

He was younger than Dominic, handsome in a careless way, with the restless eyes of a man who believed inheritance had cheated him.
“You summoned me?” Marco asked.
Dominic stood by the window.
Clara sat near the fireplace.
Elise waited with the evidence folder closed in her lap.
No security was visible, which meant security was everywhere.
Dominic turned.
“Did you give Nolan Whitmore Clara’s private history?”
Marco laughed. “Good morning to you too.”
Dominic said nothing.
The silence stretched.
Marco’s smile faded.
“I made introductions,” he said. “Business is business.”
“You gave him my wife.”
Marco’s eyes flicked toward Clara.
“She volunteered at a public event. Don’t make it sound dramatic.”
Clara stood.
“I was sixteen when my mother went to Harbor Light,” she said. “That information was sealed in a foundation file.”
Marco shrugged. “People talk.”
Elise opened the folder and played a short clip.
Marco’s own voice filled the room.
“Use the wife. Dominic thinks with his guilt when she’s involved.”
Marco stopped breathing.
Dominic stepped closer.
For one terrible second, everyone remembered the old Dominic Raines.
Then Clara said, “No.”
Dominic stopped.
Marco sneered at her. “Still giving commands?”
Clara walked up to him.
“No. I am giving you the only mercy you will receive.”
She placed a document against his chest.
“Resignation papers. You leave every Raines board, trust, and investment vehicle by five o’clock today.”
Marco glanced at Dominic. “You’re letting her do this?”
Dominic’s voice was ice. “You should be grateful she is.”
Marco’s face twisted.
“You made this family weak,” he spat at Dominic. “Our fathers built fear. You built charities and hotel contracts.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“My father died because men like you mistook fear for power.”
Marco looked ready to strike.
Clara did not move.
Dominic said, “Sign.”
Marco stared at them both.
Then he smiled.
“You think Nolan was the only one I talked to?”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
Marco leaned toward Dominic.
“Your past is not buried, cousin. It’s waiting.”
He signed the papers with a flourish and left.
Ten seconds after the elevator doors closed, Dominic’s phone rang.
Elise answered for him.
Her face changed.
“What is it?” Clara asked.
Elise looked at Dominic.

“The district attorney just announced a formal inquiry into Raines Capital.”
Marco’s final knife had landed.
