Chapter 16 - ROBERT’S LAST CARD

Robert Davenport had spent his life believing fear was loyalty.
So when fear stopped working, he reached for money.
From jail, through his attorney, he offered Thomas a deal.
Robert would admit to disciplining the children too harshly. Helen would resign from the foundation. The family would make a public apology. In exchange, Thomas would stop pushing questions about Claire.
Daniel read the proposal aloud in Thomas’s office.
Thomas listened without expression.
When Daniel finished, Rebecca appeared in the doorway.
She had heard enough.
“Is Grandpa sorry?” she asked.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
Daniel said nothing.
Rebecca understood.
“He’s only scared.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
She walked into the office holding something behind her back.
“I found this in my old overnight bag from Grandma’s house.”
She handed Thomas a small voice recorder.
Thomas stared.
Rebecca twisted her fingers together.
“Mom gave it to me when I was little. She said if adults ever scared me, I should press the red button. I forgot I had it. Grandma found it once and laughed because the battery was dead.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Was it dead?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I changed the batteries before the party. I wanted to record Grandma so you’d believe me.”
Thomas’s throat tightened.
“What did you record?”
Rebecca’s face went pale.
“I don’t know. I was too scared to listen.”
Daniel took the recorder carefully.
They connected it to the computer.
Static filled the room.
Then Helen’s voice.
“You will serve today because your father needs to remember what happens when he chooses gutter blood.”
Robert’s voice followed.
“Let them cry. Thomas won’t believe them over us.”
A pause.
Then Elaine laughing.
“What if he sees the videos?”
Helen replied, “Then we remind him what happened to Claire when she tried to embarrass this family.”
Silence.
Thomas’s hands went numb.
Daniel whispered, “That’s admissible enough to reopen everything aggressively.”
The recording continued.
Robert again, lower now.
“Leon is gone. Lydia is gone. Claire is gone. The boy is too young to remember. We survived worse.”
Thomas stopped the audio.
Rebecca was shaking.
He pulled her into his arms.
“You did nothing wrong,” he whispered.
She sobbed, “I wanted you to believe me.”
“I believe you.”
Within an hour, Detective Quinn had the file.
Within two, Robert’s deal vanished.

Within three, Helen’s attorney quit.
And by sunset, every major donor to the Davenport Children’s Foundation had received a subpoena.
