Chapter 19 - THE VERDICT

The jury deliberated for eleven hours.

Thomas spent those hours in a courthouse waiting room with his children, Mrs. Alvarez, Daniel, and Detective Quinn.

No one said much.

Jacob slept with his head in Thomas’s lap. Samuel kicked his sneakers softly against the chair. Rebecca stared at the vending machine like it held answers.

When the bailiff finally opened the door, everyone stood.

Robert did not look at Thomas when the verdict was read.

Guilty.

Conspiracy to commit murder.

Guilty.

Financial fraud.

Guilty.

Child endangerment.

Guilty.

Obstruction.

Guilty.

Helen remained perfectly still until the second guilty.

Then her face folded inward.

Robert shouted at his attorneys. Helen whispered something no one could hear.

Thomas did not celebrate.

There are victories too heavy for joy.

Rebecca reached for his hand.

“Is it over?”

Thomas looked at Robert being led away. Then Helen.

“No,” he said honestly. “But the lying part is.”

At sentencing, the judge spoke about cruelty disguised as tradition, about wealth used as a weapon, about children treated as servants in a house legally belonging to them.

Robert received life.

Helen received thirty years.

Elaine avoided prison but lost custody temporarily after investigators found she had encouraged her children to participate in the abuse. Madison, because she had turned over evidence and testified honestly, was spared charges.

After court, reporters shouted questions.

Thomas ignored all of them until one asked, “Mr. Davenport, what happens to the estate now?”

Thomas stopped.

He turned toward the cameras.

“The estate belonged to my children before anyone here knew it,” he said. “But a house where children were locked away does not deserve to be called a home.”

Rebecca looked up.

Thomas continued.

“We are selling it. Every dollar will go to a new foundation in Claire’s name, for children who were harmed by the adults meant to protect them.”

A reporter shouted, “And the Davenport name?”

Thomas looked at his children.

Then he answered.

“It ends with Robert.”

He walked away holding Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob close.

Behind him, cameras flashed.

Ahead of him, for the first time in years, there was no mansion waiting.

Only home.
