Chapter 11 - The Child They Counted OnAlejandro Moretti had ordered men killed.

He had broken alliances, bought judges, buried secrets, and carried a reputation built on fear.
But nothing in his life had prepared him for a crime that used a child’s illness as strategy.
“They knew Emma had the pen,” Clara whispered.
Detective Shaw nodded grimly. “Looks that way.”
“Why?”
Alejandro answered before Shaw could.
“Because if I died after she used it, the story would be perfect.”
Clara looked at him.
He continued, voice low. “A maid’s child panics. Injects me with something. I die. The poison disappears into confusion. Emma becomes the reason, not the witness.”
Clara grabbed the shelf to steady herself.
“They were going to blame my daughter?”
Alejandro’s silence was answer enough.
Upstairs, Emma sat on a velvet bench with Officer Reyes, swinging her legs and watching police move through the house.
She did not know men downstairs were discovering how close she had come to being turned into a weapon.
She only knew her backpack was empty.
And Mr. Moretti had not died.
When Clara returned from the cellar, Emma ran to her.
“Did you find Daddy?”
Clara froze.
Alejandro, climbing the stairs behind her, stopped too.
Clara knelt and took Emma’s face in both hands.
“Not yet, baby.”
Emma’s lower lip trembled. “But maybe?”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Maybe.”
Alejandro looked away.
That single word did more damage to him than Bruno’s betrayal.
Maybe.
A child living on maybe.
A wife surviving on maybe.
A missing man reduced to rumor because Alejandro’s empire created shadows large enough for innocent people to vanish inside them.
Detective Shaw approached. “We need to move Mrs. Carter and the child somewhere safe.”
“No,” Alejandro said.
Shaw’s eyebrows lifted.
He corrected himself. “Not out of my protection.”
Clara stood. “Your protection almost killed my daughter.”
“That was Bruno’s plan.”
“And Bruno was your man.”
The words landed.
Alejandro did not flinch.
“Yes,” he said.
Clara had expected denial.
She had not expected acceptance.
“I failed to see the rot in my own house,” he said. “That failure nearly cost your daughter her life. I will not ask you to trust me.”
“Good.”
“But I will keep her safe whether you trust me or not.”
Before Clara could answer, the front doors opened.
An officer entered with a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a phone.
“We found this in Sofia Bellini’s car,” he said.
Detective Shaw took it.
The screen was cracked, but still alive.
A message was open.
It contained only six words.
If the child lived, take her.
Clara pulled Emma against her.
Alejandro looked at the message.
Then at the dark driveway beyond the open doors.
For the first time that night, fear entered his eyes.
May you like
Not for himself.
For Emma.
