Chapter 9 - Clara’s GhostClara Carter had spent two years believing her husband had run.

Nathan Carter had left one morning before sunrise with a duffel bag, a kiss pressed to Emma’s sleeping forehead, and a promise that he would be back by dinner.
He never returned.
The police found his car abandoned near the river.
No body.
No note.
No answers.
People told Clara what people always tell abandoned women when they are tired of their grief.
Maybe he started over.
Maybe he got scared.
Maybe he was not the man you thought he was.
Clara stopped defending a ghost.
She took cleaning jobs. Then kitchen jobs. Then the position at the Moretti estate, where the pay was steady and the danger wore expensive shoes.
Now Bruno Ricci stood handcuffed beneath a chandelier and claimed Alejandro Moretti had buried Nathan Carter.
Clara felt the house tilt.
“No,” she said.
Alejandro looked genuinely confused.
“I don’t know your husband.”
Bruno laughed.
“You don’t remember every body, Alejandro.”
Detective Shaw stepped closer to Bruno. “Explain.”
Bruno looked at Clara.
“Nathan Carter was a delivery driver. Wrong place, wrong night. Saw something at the docks. Alejandro ordered the cleanup.”
“That’s a lie,” Alejandro said.
“Is it?” Bruno asked. “You signed the order.”
Alejandro’s face hardened. “I signed many things you brought me.”
“And that,” Bruno said softly, “was always your weakness.”
Clara backed away from Alejandro.
He saw it and seemed struck.
“Clara.”
“Don’t,” she whispered.
Emma looked up. “Mommy?”
Clara could not answer.
Detective Shaw ordered officers to take Bruno outside. As they dragged him away, he called back, “Check the old wine cellar. Behind the north wall. He keeps his sins cold.”
The hall fell silent after him.
Alejandro stood slowly.
Doctor Vale protested.
Alejandro ignored him.
“To the cellar,” he said.
Detective Shaw blocked him. “You’re not going anywhere alone.”
“I’m not asking.”
“No,” Clara said.
Everyone turned.
Her voice was thin, but it did not break.
“If my husband is down there, I go first.”
Alejandro looked at her for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
The wine cellar was beneath the oldest part of the house, beyond locked iron doors and stone steps worn smooth by generations of Morettis.
The air grew colder as they descended.
Clara carried Emma at first, but halfway down, Alejandro stopped.
“She should not see this,” he said.
Clara hated that he was right.
She gave Emma to Detective Shaw’s female partner, Officer Reyes.
“Stay here, baby.”
Emma clutched her rabbit backpack. “Mommy, don’t go where it’s dark.”
Clara kissed her forehead.
“I have to.”
At the bottom of the stairs, Alejandro unlocked the cellar.

Behind rows of old wine, Detective Shaw found fresh mortar on the north wall.
Clara stopped breathing.
