Chapter 14 - The Dead Girl’s WitnessAlejandro did not break.

That would have been easier to watch.
He went still.
So still that Clara thought grief had turned him into one of the stone statues outside his own house.
Detective Shaw carefully removed Kiara’s photograph from the wall.
“Alejandro,” she said.
He did not answer.
Luca stepped forward. “Boss?”
Alejandro looked at the photo.
Then he looked at the floor.
A tiny pink bead lay beneath the desk.
Clara saw it because Emma had dropped thousands like it before.
A child’s hair bead.
Alejandro knelt slowly and picked it up.
His hand shook.
“Kiara wore these,” he said.
Detective Shaw took the bead in an evidence bag.
Behind a locked storage door, officers found children’s toys in plastic bins.
Not many.
Enough.
A stuffed bear missing one eye.
A pink ribbon.
A small shoe.
Alejandro turned away and vomited into a trash can.
No one spoke.
Not even Shaw.
In the next room, an officer shouted, “We found someone!”
Clara ran.
At the end of a narrow hall was a steel door.
Behind it, a man lay on a cot under a thin blanket.
Beard overgrown.
Face hollow.
One wrist scarred.
But his eyes opened when Clara stepped in.
For two years, Clara had imagined this moment so many times that reality felt impossible.
“Nathan?” she whispered.
The man blinked.
His mouth moved.
“Clara?”
She collapsed beside him.
Nathan Carter reached for her with a hand so thin it looked breakable.
“I tried to come home,” he said, voice cracked. “I tried.”
Clara sobbed against his chest.
Behind her, Emma stood frozen in the doorway, clutching her rabbit backpack.
Nathan looked over Clara’s shoulder.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Emmy?”
Emma did not move at first.
The father she remembered was larger, warmer, younger.
This man was a ghost wearing his voice.
Then he smiled.
Weakly.
Badly.
But it was his smile.
Emma dropped the backpack and ran.
“Daddy!”
Nathan broke when she reached him.
He held her with what strength he had and cried like a man who had survived on the memory of that word.
Alejandro stood outside the room, unable to enter.
He had come to rescue a witness.
Instead, he had found the life his empire had stolen.
Detective Shaw joined him.
“You know what this means,” she said.
Alejandro nodded.
“Bruno didn’t just betray you yesterday.”
“No,” Alejandro said.
“He’s been building this for years.”
Alejandro looked toward the room where Clara’s family held each other.
Then he looked down at Kiara’s photograph in Shaw’s hand.
“So have I,” he said.
Shaw frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means Bruno forgot something.”
“What?”
May you like
Alejandro’s eyes turned cold.
“I was never only dangerous when I had power.”
