Chapter 12 - The Man at the GateThe attack came before dawn.

Police had searched the estate for hours. Sofia had been arrested. Bruno had been taken into custody. Guards loyal to Bruno were detained, questioned, stripped of weapons.

Everyone believed the house was finally secure.

Everyone was wrong.

At 5:18 a.m., the power went out.

The chandelier died.

The security monitors went black.

The mansion fell into a darkness so complete it seemed swallowed.

Emma woke screaming.

Clara wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Alejandro, who had refused to return to bed, stood instantly from the chair across the room.

“Down,” he ordered.

A bullet punched through the window.

Glass exploded inward.

Clara dragged Emma behind the sofa as another shot tore into the wall where Alejandro had been standing.

Detective Shaw shouted from the hall.

“Shots fired! East side!”

Alejandro pulled a gun from beneath the fireplace mantel.

Clara stared at him. “You keep guns everywhere?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not comforting.”

“It is right now.”

He moved toward the door.

Clara grabbed his sleeve. “You’re barely standing.”

“And they’re here for her.”

Emma whimpered.

Alejandro looked down at the little girl hiding beneath her mother’s arm.

His face changed.

Softer.

Worse.

Like grief had grown teeth.

“I had a daughter,” he said quietly. “I failed her. I will not fail yours.”

Then he went into the hall.

Outside, a black van had crashed through the service gate.

Three men in dark coats crossed the lawn toward the broken garden doors.

Police lights flashed without sirens.

Officers shouted.

Gunfire cracked across the estate.

Alejandro moved through his own house like a ghost returning to a battlefield he knew by memory. He took the back corridor, the one hidden behind the portrait gallery, and emerged near the winter garden.

Luca was already there, wounded in the shoulder but standing.

“They’re Bruno’s outside crew,” Luca said.

“How many?”

“Four, maybe five.”

“Alive?”

“Not for long.”

Alejandro looked at him.

Luca swallowed. “Your order?”

Alejandro thought of Emma’s empty backpack.

“Disable them,” he said. “Police need answers.”

Luca blinked.

Old Alejandro would have said something else.

But old Alejandro had died on the rug and been dragged back by a child.

At the front gate, Detective Shaw caught one attacker alive.

He was bleeding, furious, and terrified.

When officers searched him, they found another printed photo of Emma.

On the back, an address was written.

Clara’s old apartment.

Beneath it, a name.

Nathan Carter.

Detective Shaw carried the evidence inside just as the first gray light touched the windows.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said carefully. “I think your husband may still be alive.”

Clara almost dropped Emma.

Alejandro looked at the paper.

Then he saw the address beneath Nathan’s name.
