Chapter 14 - Celeste’s InsuranceCeleste Thorne did not disappear because she was afraid of prison.

Prison was vulgar.

She disappeared because she understood leverage.

For thirty years, she had survived wealthy men by keeping copies. Letters. Transfers. Photographs. Recordings from dinners where powerful people drank too much and spoke too freely.

Her late husband had called it paranoia.

Celeste called it civilization.

At 10:12 a.m., she landed on a private estate in coastal Maine under a false flight plan. The property belonged to a former ambassador who owed her a favor and feared her memory.

She dismissed the pilot, entered the house alone, and went directly to the wine cellar.

Behind a rack of Bordeaux was a wall safe.

Inside were three passports, diamonds, emergency cash, and a silver hard drive labeled in her own handwriting:

CHRISTMAS 2019.

No one would know what it meant.

That was the point.

She connected the drive to a secure laptop.

Folders appeared.

ROSSI.

THORNE.

JUDGES.

DANIEL REED.

Celeste stared at the last folder longer than the others.

She had not ordered Daniel’s death.

She told herself that often.

She had simply attended a dinner where Vittorio said a young public defender was becoming inconvenient. She had simply warned that scandal near the hospital development would damage everyone. She had simply left before dessert.

What men did after dinner was their business.

That was how she had lived with herself.

Until Khloe.

Khloe with her quiet eyes.

Khloe who asked too many questions.

Khloe who looked at Marcus as if he were a man, not an asset.

Celeste hated her most for that.

Her phone rang on the encrypted line.

Vittorio.

She answered.

“You lost your nerve,” he said.

Celeste smiled faintly. “No. I found it.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you are not.”

“You think you can bargain with federal prosecutors?”

“I think I can bargain with everyone.”

“You signed those transfers.”

“And you received them.”

Vittorio went silent.

Celeste opened the Daniel Reed folder.

There it was.

A recorded conversation from December 2019.

Vittorio’s voice.

A judge’s voice.

A third man arranging the driver.

Celeste had never listened past the first minute.

She did now.

Her face did not change.

But her hand tightened around the mouse.

Vittorio said, “Destroy whatever you think you have.”

Celeste replied, “You should have controlled your daughter.”

“You should have controlled your son.”

“My son was controllable until Khloe.”

“Then give her to me.”

Celeste’s smile faded.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the wife is still the center. Remove her from the board, from the case, from public sympathy. I don’t care how.”

For the first time, Celeste heard him clearly.

Not as an ally.

As a threat.

She thought of Julian in the incubator.

Tiny.

Breathing through machines.

Her grandson.

Not leverage.

Not legacy.

A child.

Something flickered in Celeste.

It was not goodness.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But it was blood.

And blood, in families like hers, could be stronger than shame.

She ended the call.

Then she opened an email draft addressed to Dana Whitlock.

Subject: Proffer Materials.

She attached one file.

Daniel Reed.

Her finger hovered over send.

Then the power went out.

The laptop screen stayed alive on battery.

Celeste froze.

Upstairs, glass broke.

She closed the laptop and reached into the safe for the small pistol she had kept for twenty years and never fired.

Footsteps moved above her.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone had found her.

Back at St. Aurelia, Khloe was with Julian when Dana’s phone buzzed.

Dana read the notification.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?” Marcus asked.

“Celeste just attempted contact.”

Khloe looked up.

“Attempted?”

“An encrypted email pinged our server but did not complete delivery.”

Elias stepped closer. “Can you trace it?”

Dana was already typing.

“Maybe.”

Marcus’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

For three seconds, there was only static.

Then Celeste’s voice whispered, breathless and stripped of all elegance.

“Marcus.”

His body went rigid.

“Mother?”

“Listen to me. I have proof. Daniel Reed. The money. Rossi. All of it.”

“Where are you?”

A sound cracked in the background.

Celeste gasped.

Then she said something Marcus had not heard since childhood.

Not with sincerity.

Not like this.

“I’m sorry.”

The line went dead.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Khloe’s face went pale.

Dana moved fast.

“We need that location.”

Marcus looked at her.

Then at Khloe.

For the first time, Khloe saw the boy inside the billionaire.

The son inside the husband.

The man whose mother might be terrible, guilty, and still in danger.

“Go,” Khloe said softly.

Marcus’s eyes met hers.

“No private retaliation,” she reminded him.

He nodded.

May you like

Then he left with federal agents.

And Khloe remained beside Julian, unaware that Isabella Rossi had just walked into the hospital lobby wearing a nurse’s stolen badge.
