Chapter 16 - The Confession in the CellIsabella refused to speak for six hours.

Then she refused water.

Then she demanded her father.

When police told her Vittorio Rossi was unavailable because federal agents were executing warrants at three Rossi properties, she laughed.

“My father doesn’t become unavailable,” she said.

The detective said nothing.

That scared her more than an answer.

By evening, Isabella sat alone in an interview room wearing county-issued gray. Her hair hung loose around her face. One nail had broken during the hospital arrest. A bruise darkened her wrist where she had fought officers.

There were no chandeliers here.

No champagne.

No men leaning in to hear her whisper.

Just fluorescent light and a camera in the corner.

The door opened.

Dana Whitlock entered with a detective.

Isabella leaned back.

“I want my attorney.”

“He’s on his way,” Dana said. “Until then, we’re not questioning you.”

“Then why are you here?”

Dana placed a photograph on the table.

Daniel Reed.

Isabella’s expression flickered.

Dana saw it.

“You know him.”

Isabella looked away. “No.”

“You reacted.”

“I reacted because you put some dead man’s photo in front of me like a horror trick.”

Dana placed another image down.

Khloe on the floor of the hospital suite.

Isabella’s heel lifted in the frame.

Isabella’s jaw tightened.

“Everyone keeps showing that like it means something.”

“It means assault.”

“It means she fell.”

Dana placed a third photograph down.

Julian in the incubator.

Isabella looked at it.

For the first time, her expression changed into something complicated.

Not remorse.

Recognition.

Dana leaned forward.

“Your father used you.”

Isabella laughed. “Weak.”

“He let you believe this was about Marcus. About jealousy. About replacing Khloe.”

Isabella’s eyes sharpened.

Dana continued, “But he needed Khloe discredited because she had evidence. Celeste needed Khloe gone because Marcus was pulling away. You were useful because you were angry enough to act.”

“Stop.”

“You weren’t the mastermind, Isabella. You were the weapon.”

Isabella stood so quickly the chair hit the wall.

The detective moved forward.

Dana raised a hand.

Isabella’s voice shook. “My father protects me.”

Dana’s face remained calm.

“Your father told his attorney this morning that your actions were the result of emotional instability.”

Isabella froze.

Dana let that land.

“He is preparing to separate himself from you.”

“No.”

“He will say he never instructed you, never encouraged you, never knew you entered the suite.”

“No.”

“He will sacrifice you.”

Isabella’s breathing changed.

The door opened again.

Her attorney rushed in, furious. “This conversation ends now.”

Dana gathered the photographs.

“Of course.”

She stood.

At the door, Isabella spoke.

“What happens if I talk?”

Her attorney spun around. “Isabella, no.”

Dana turned back.

“That depends on whether you tell the truth before your father finishes burying you.”

Isabella stared at the photo of Julian still on the table.

Small.

Fragile.

Alive.

Her lips trembled—not with guilt, but with the rage of a daughter finally understanding she had been disposable.

“My father told me Khloe was going to ruin us,” she said.

Her attorney closed his eyes.

Dana sat back down.

Isabella looked at the camera.

“He said she needed to break in a way no one would believe her afterward.”

At St. Aurelia, Khloe watched the city darken from her hospital window while Julian slept in NICU.

Marcus returned from Maine with Celeste’s hard drive and a face older than the one he had left with.

“Is she alive?” Khloe asked.

“Yes.”

“Did she give Dana everything?”

“Yes.”

Khloe nodded.

Marcus sat beside her.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he said, “Isabella confessed.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

The words should have felt like victory.

They didn’t.

“What did she say?”

“That Vittorio wanted you broken.”

Khloe opened her eyes.

“And Celeste?”

Marcus’s silence answered.

Khloe looked at him.

“Marcus.”

“She gave evidence,” he said. “Against Vittorio. Against herself too, maybe. Dana has the drive.”

“That doesn’t erase what she did.”

“No.”

“Or what you allowed.”

He absorbed that.

“No.”

Khloe’s voice softened slightly. “But it matters that you stopped allowing it.”

Marcus looked at her.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a door not fully closed.

He took a breath.

“There’s something else.”

Khloe waited.

“Daniel Reed’s case files were on the drive. His death wasn’t random.”

Tears filled Khloe’s eyes.

This time Marcus did reach for her hand.

This time she let him.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Khloe looked toward the NICU hall.

“So am I.”

Outside, news broke across every major network.

ROSSI FOUNDATION UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

ISABELLA ROSSI FACES ADDITIONAL CHARGES AFTER SECOND HOSPITAL INCIDENT.

THORNE FAMILY DOCUMENTS TURNED OVER TO AUTHORITIES.

The public loved a fall from grace.

But this was not grace falling.

It was rot being exposed.

And in a cell across the city, Isabella Rossi gave one final statement before her attorney could stop her.

“My father said if the baby died, Khloe would be too devastated to testify.”

That sentence changed everything.
