Chapter 18 - Isabella’s Last PerformanceThe preliminary hearing became a spectacle.

Of course it did.
The courtroom filled before sunrise. Reporters lined the hall. Legal commentators whispered into cameras. Every person who had ever smiled beside the Rossis at a gala suddenly claimed they had always suspected something was wrong.
Khloe did not attend in person.
Her doctors refused.
Instead, she watched from a secure hospital room with Julian’s monitor feed open beside the court livestream. Marcus sat next to her, close enough to be present, far enough not to presume.
Isabella entered the courtroom in a plain gray dress.
No crimson silk.
No diamonds.
No perfect armor.
Still, she knew how to turn heads.
She paused just long enough for cameras to catch the wounded daughter, the fallen heiress, the beautiful defendant prepared to confess.
Khloe saw the performance immediately.
So did Marcus.
“She’s enjoying it,” Khloe said.
Marcus nodded. “She still thinks attention is power.”
On screen, Isabella took the stand.
Her voice trembled at first.
Then steadied.
She described Vittorio’s anger when he learned Khloe had contacted federal authorities. She described meetings where Celeste discussed “removing Khloe’s influence.” She described Nolan Vance arranging access, messages, rumors, pressure.
Then the prosecutor asked the question everyone waited for.
“Did your father instruct you to assault Khloe Thorne?”
Isabella lowered her eyes.
A perfect pause.
“Yes.”
The courtroom exploded.
Vittorio slammed his hand on the defense table.
“Liar!”
The judge shouted for order.
Isabella looked at her father.
For one second, the mask slipped.
The daughter wanted him to hurt.
Not because he was guilty.
Because he had tried to abandon her first.
The prosecutor continued.
“What exactly did he say?”
Isabella’s voice softened.
“He said Khloe needed to lose everything she thought protected her.”
Khloe felt cold move through her body.
Marcus reached toward her hand, then stopped.
She noticed.
After a moment, she placed her hand over his.
On screen, Vittorio stared at Isabella with murder in his eyes.
But Isabella was not finished.
“My father said if she miscarried, people would call it tragic. If she survived and accused us, people would call her unstable.”
The judge’s face hardened.
Khloe looked at Julian’s monitor.
His oxygen saturation held steady.
A tiny number on a screen.
A miracle in digits.
Then Isabella turned toward the gallery.
“The truth is,” she said, “I hated her before my father ever asked.”
Her attorney whispered sharply, trying to stop her.
She ignored him.
“I hated that she was ordinary and still chosen. I hated that Marcus looked calmer when she entered a room. I hated that she didn’t have to chase power because she had something I never learned how to keep.”
The courtroom went silent.
“What was that?” the prosecutor asked.
Isabella looked directly at the camera without meaning to.
“Love.”
Khloe’s breath caught.
Not because she pitied Isabella.
Because for the first time, Isabella had told the truth without using it as a weapon.
Then Vittorio’s lawyer rose for cross-examination.
He destroyed the moment piece by piece.
He painted Isabella as unstable, jealous, vindictive. He suggested she invented her father’s involvement to save herself. He showed photos of her partying, headlines about her temper, messages where she insulted Khloe viciously.
Isabella’s face hardened with each question.
By the end, the sympathy she had gathered began to leak away.
That was when the prosecutor introduced Celeste’s hard drive.
The courtroom changed.
A recording played.
Vittorio’s voice filled the speakers.
“She needs to break in a way no one believes her afterward.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Marcus went still beside her.
On screen, Vittorio’s face emptied.
There are moments when guilty men understand sound can become a cage.
This was one.
The judge denied bail.
Vittorio was remanded.
Isabella was remanded.
Nolan Vance was arrested before leaving the courthouse.
Outside, reporters shouted into microphones that the Rossi dynasty had collapsed.
Inside the hospital, Khloe turned off the stream.
Silence settled.
Marcus looked at her.
“It’s over,” he said softly.
Khloe shook her head.
“No.”
He frowned.
She looked toward the NICU feed.
“It’s beginning.”
Because justice was not the end.
Healing was.

And healing, Khloe knew, would demand something far harder than testimony.
It would demand deciding what remained of her marriage after the war was won.
