Chapter 7 - Khloe’s SecretKhloe had one secret.

It was not an affair.
It was not a hidden debt.
It was not a scandal from before her marriage.
It was a file.
A blue folder stored in a locked drawer of her old apartment, a place Marcus had offered to sell three times and she had refused to let go.
Inside the folder were photographs, bank records, text messages, and a printed statement from a woman named Maribel Cruz.
For months, Khloe had been investigating the Rossi Foundation.
At first, she had not meant to.
She had only volunteered to review donor outreach for the hospital wing because Marcus was overloaded and Celeste kept implying Khloe had no real value beyond smiling beside him.
Then numbers stopped matching.
A children’s rehabilitation program that supposedly received two million dollars had never opened.
A maternal health initiative listed on the foundation website had no staff.
A clinic in Queens appeared in every annual report, but when Khloe visited, the address led to a shuttered nail salon.
She had brought it to Marcus once.
Not the full file.
Just a question.
“Do you know why Rossi Foundation expenses look strange?”
Marcus had been leaving for London. He had kissed her forehead, glanced at the spreadsheet, and said, “Their accounting is messy. Don’t get pulled into it.”
Don’t get pulled into it.
So she didn’t tell him when she kept looking.
She didn’t tell him when Maribel Cruz, a former Rossi bookkeeper, contacted her privately.
She didn’t tell him when Maribel claimed Vittorio Rossi used charity accounts to launder political bribes and hide payments to judges.
And she definitely did not tell him when Isabella Rossi started appearing wherever Khloe went.
Now, lying in a hospital bed with stitches across her abdomen and her son behind NICU glass, Khloe understood that Isabella had not attacked her only out of jealousy.
The Rossis wanted the file.
And Celeste might have known.
Elias sat beside her bed while Marcus dealt with police.
Khloe turned her head toward him.
“Uncle Eli.”
He leaned forward immediately. “What do you need?”
“My apartment.”
His face changed. “The folder?”
Khloe’s breath caught.
“You know?”
“I know you. You don’t keep an apartment for nostalgia.”
Despite everything, Khloe almost smiled.
Elias had helped raise her after her parents died. He understood her silences better than most people understood speeches.
“Get it before they do,” she whispered.
Elias stood.
“Where?”
“Bedroom closet. Bottom drawer. Blue folder. There’s also a flash drive taped under the drawer.”
He nodded.
“Take security,” she said.
“I will.”
“And don’t tell Marcus yet.”
Elias paused.
Khloe saw the question in his eyes.
“He already feels guilty,” she said. “Guilt makes powerful men reckless. I need him clear.”
Elias’s expression softened.
“You are the one in a hospital bed, and you’re still protecting him.”
Khloe looked away.
“I’m protecting our son.”
Elias kissed her forehead.
“I’ll be back.”
But Elias was not the only person who knew about the apartment.
At 7:15 that morning, while paparazzi gathered outside St. Aurelia and gossip accounts fed on rumor, a black SUV stopped outside Khloe’s old building in Tribeca.
Two men entered with copied keys.
They wore maintenance jackets.
They did not speak to the doorman.
Because the doorman was already gone.
Paid to take a cigarette break across the street.
The men went upstairs.
Apartment 14C still smelled faintly of lavender and unopened books. Khloe had kept it furnished but empty, a quiet escape from the Thorne mansion and Celeste’s constant judgment.
The first man crossed to the bedroom.
The second watched the hall.
They found the locked drawer in under three minutes.
The first man removed tools from his pocket.
Then he stopped.
There was a sound from the living room.
A soft click.
Both men turned.
Elias Monroe stood in the hallway with Marcus’s head of security and two armed guards behind him.
Elias looked at the drawer.
Then at the men.
“You’re early,” he said.
The first man reached for something under his jacket.
Marcus’s security chief moved faster.
The man hit the floor hard.
The second tried to run.
He made it three steps.
Within thirty seconds, both intruders were restrained on Khloe’s antique rug.
Elias opened the drawer himself.
The blue folder was there.
The flash drive was still taped beneath the wood.
He removed both and placed them inside his coat.
His phone rang.
Khloe.
He answered immediately.
“I have it.”
There was silence.
Then Khloe exhaled.
“Were they there?”
“Yes.”
“Rossi?”
“Likely.”
Another pause.
Then Khloe said, “Uncle Eli, listen carefully. If anything happens to me, give that file to the federal prosecutor named Dana Whitlock.”
Elias went still.
“Federal prosecutor?”
“Yes.”
“How long have you been talking to her?”
Khloe closed her eyes in the hospital bed.
“Three weeks.”
Elias felt the final piece slide into place.
The attack had not been random.
It had not even been emotional.
It had been panic.
May you like
The Rossis were not trying to ruin Khloe.
They were trying to silence her.
