Chapter 10 - The Fire That FailedSmoke makes people honest.

In smoke, money means nothing. Names mean nothing. Polished shoes and perfect manners vanish under coughing, panic, and darkness.

Arthur lifted Olivia from the chair.

She weighed almost nothing.

That destroyed him all over again.

Victoria grabbed the medical bag from the nurse and shoved it into Evelyn’s arms.

“This way,” Victoria said.

Arthur turned sharply. “How do you know?”

Victoria pointed down the hall. “Because my father brought me here once.”

“When?”

“The night after Olivia disappeared.”

Arthur stared at her.

Victoria’s eyes were haunted.

“He wanted me to understand consequences.”

There was no time to answer.

They moved.

The main hall was blocked by smoke. Sprinklers sputtered uselessly. Somewhere, fire alarms screamed and people cried behind locked doors.

Arthur shouted for agents to open every room.

Evelyn helped drag one elderly patient into the hall. Victoria broke a glass medicine cabinet and used a metal rod to smash the lock on another door.

Arthur saw her through the smoke, coughing, bleeding again, still moving.

He did not forgive her.

But he saw her.

There is a difference.

Olivia stirred in his arms.

“Babies,” she murmured.

“Waiting,” Arthur said. “They’re waiting.”

At the stairwell, two men in black blocked the exit.

Not staff.

Warren’s men.

Arthur handed Olivia to Evelyn and stepped forward.

One man reached inside his jacket.

Victoria screamed, “Arthur!”

A shot cracked.

The bullet struck the wall beside him.

Arthur drove into the first man before he could fire again. The second lunged toward Evelyn, but Victoria swung the metal rod with both hands and struck his wrist. The gun clattered to the floor.

Evelyn kicked it away.

Arthur slammed the first man against the railing until he dropped.

They ran down the stairs.

Outside, dawn bled across the lawn.

Ambulances screamed toward the building.

Federal agents swarmed the entrance.

Arthur carried Olivia into the cold morning air.

She opened her eyes as sunlight touched her face.

For the first time in twelve years, Olivia Hart was outside.

Arthur lowered her onto a stretcher.

She grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

“Don’t let him take them.”

“He won’t.”

“You don’t know him.”

Arthur looked at the burning building.

“I’m learning.”

Victoria stumbled out behind them, coughing violently. An agent caught her before she fell.

Evelyn hurried over. “Arthur, we have files. The director tried to burn records, but the agents got the servers.”

Arthur nodded.

Then his phone rang.

Mrs. Bell.

His stomach dropped.

He answered.

Mrs. Bell’s voice was shaking. “Sir, the children are safe.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“But?”

“There’s someone at the gate.”

Arthur turned slowly.

“Who?”

“A woman. She says she’s from social services. She has a court order to remove Maya and Noah immediately.”

Arthur’s blood chilled.

Evelyn grabbed the phone and put it on speaker.

Mrs. Bell continued, “Sir, the order is signed by Judge Keller.”

Evelyn cursed softly.

Arthur knew that name.

Judge Thomas Keller.

Warren Bellamy’s oldest friend.

Victoria wiped soot from her face.

“He’s not trying to kidnap them now,” she whispered.

“He’s trying to make the law do it for him.”

Arthur looked at Olivia on the stretcher.

Then at the smoke rising behind Saint Orla’s.

Then at Victoria.

“Tell Mrs. Bell nobody enters.”

Evelyn nodded.

May you like

Arthur’s voice became ice.

“We’re going to court.”
