Chapter 18 - The Boy in the Pool HouseWarren Bellamy made bail three days later.

Nobody expected it.

Evelyn called it corruption.

Arthur called it warning.

That night, the estate went into lockdown again.

But Warren did not come through the gates.

He sent fire.

The pool house exploded just after midnight.

Arthur woke to the sound of glass breaking and alarms screaming.

For one second, he was back in every nightmare.

Fire. Hospital. Empty caskets. Lost children.

Then Maya screamed.

“Noah!”

Arthur ran.

Smoke rolled across the east lawn.

The pool house was burning.

Noah had gone there earlier to retrieve Ruth’s old photo album. He had been afraid to ask permission, afraid it would be taken away like everything else.

Maya stood barefoot in the grass, sobbing.

“He’s inside!”

Arthur ran toward the flames.

Security grabbed him.

He fought them.

Then someone passed him.

Victoria.

She sprinted barefoot across broken glass and smoke, straight toward the burning pool house.

Arthur roared, “Victoria!”

She did not stop.

For one terrible second, he saw who she might have been if fear had not owned her life.

She vanished into the smoke.

Inside, Noah was curled behind a cabinet, coughing, clutching Ruth’s photo album to his chest.

Victoria dropped to her knees.

“Noah!”

He recoiled.

“Don’t touch me!”

The words struck her harder than smoke.

She held out her hands.

“I won’t hurt you.”

“You did!”

“I know.”

The ceiling cracked above them.

Victoria looked up.

“Noah, hate me outside. Please.”

He coughed violently.

She crawled closer.

“I was scared,” he sobbed.

“So was I.”

“You’re grown.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“I know.”

The ceiling groaned again.

Victoria wrapped her coat around him without touching his face.

“Hold your breath.”

He grabbed her sleeve.

She carried him through smoke and falling sparks.

Arthur met them at the doorway as part of the roof collapsed behind them.

Victoria shoved Noah into Arthur’s arms.

Then she fell.

Noah coughed and cried against Arthur’s chest.

Maya threw her arms around him.

Arthur looked down.

Victoria lay in the grass, eyes closed, hands burned, hair singed.

For the first time, Noah reached toward her.

Not forgiveness.

Not love.

But fear that she might die.

“Is she dead?” he whispered.

Arthur knelt and checked her pulse.

“No.”

Victoria’s eyes fluttered.

She looked at Noah.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Noah stared at her.

Then, very softly, he said, “You got me out.”

Victoria’s face crumpled.

Arthur watched them and understood the cruelest part of truth.

Some people do unforgivable things.

Some still do one brave thing after.

Both remain true.

Behind them, Evelyn arrived with news.

“They found Warren.”

Arthur looked up.

Evelyn’s face was grim.

“He wasn’t running.”

“Where is he?”

“At the old Bellamy airfield.”

Arthur stood slowly.

May you like

Evelyn continued.

“He has Olivia.”
